I'm writing a theoretical essay on how life would change for us/have played out differently if Louis Riel somehow became Canada's first prime minister, leaving MacDonald to his own devices, whatever those would have been.

Would Riel build a railway? Would Canada be assimilated by the US?

If you know a bit on Canadian history, feel free to make suggestion.
There would be no railway. He was trying to stop that. Assimilated to the US? I wouldn't think so.
riels main concert was to make manitoba a province in canada, wasn't it? i'd imagine if riel had been prime minister life would have been much better for metis and natives, as well as french canadiens
