So I've been browsing the forums and have realized that the I bought a crappy half stack (MG100HDFX). Guy at guitar center said it was, see if I ever believe him again. It doesn't have a bad sound, it just lacks a bite and seems to have no bottom end unless your less then 5-10 feet away.

I planned on keeping it and just living with it, but then the other day I hook up my brand new TS9 tube screamer and then thing just gets terrible noise when I'm not playing, even with a NS2 pedal hooked up. So needless to say I'm pissed and want something that works.

The problem is I'm not to sure what to get and I do not want to go with guitar center guys advice again. I don't want something super expense, but not super cheap like what I have now. I was thinking somewhere around $1000, whether it be new or used. Just buy looking around, about the only new half stack in that range that seemed decent to me was the Peavey ValveKing at around $950.

The sound I want is a nice metal tone, something thats not a noise maker. I'm open to just getting a new head and sticking with the cab even-though I heard its not the greatest either. And don't laugh I mine stupidity, I already know I made a mistake and am trying to fix it.

thanks in advance

do you really need a half stack?

if not, i would suggest a randall rg50tc

oh and the ts9 will sound much better on a tube amp instead of a SS amp

with the randall you could just use the ts9 as a boost since the randall has a good amount of gain already

Those GC salespeople dont care that they sell you crappy stuff. When i used to shop there some guy tried to get me to buy a mg half stack saying it was an awesome amp and blah blah, they are just full of crap

Usually when something says TUBE then screamer in the name its a dead give away it might not be the best option for a SS amp.. But yea thats the issue its not made for ss amps unless you have a randall and even then thats only good for low volume stuff. Clipping bad...

Sell the amp and stack and get you a nice tube combo to go with your pedal.... like the example above...

I'm not sure if I want a combo since I already have a small Peavey Special 112 (soild state I know, can't seem to get away from them) for practice. I got the half stack mainly because my band is getting ready to play some shows and I know that some combos can work fine for that. But since right now, I have some extra money laying around I would rather get another stack thats is worth the money instead of a combo.

To quote 90% of UG: YOU DON'T NEED A HALFSTACK!!!
Just look at slat's signature.

Combos are worth the money more than stacks are.

And, randall RG50TC.

^and a hella lot more portable.

is your $1000 budget for just amp and no cab or both combined?

i know you think you need a halfy 'cause it looks cool but unless you want to continually experiment with/change heads (and lug all of that around) there really is no point imo...but i don't gig either.

I kind of gig. 50 watts tube is more than enough for me.
There's hundreds of gig capable combo amps, which sound better than similarly priced halfstacks.

True, but with a $1000 and a half stack that could be sold...up the budget to $1500, and you have a ENGL Fireball with an Avatar 2x12.

Guess you're right... but it's gonna be hard to get more than 250 bucks back on an MG half stack.
Well, 250 to 300 is about how much he'd get back if he sold on craigslist, even less if he went through a store.

But, you're right. I forgot about those. I'm pretty stumped when it comes to real high budget metal amps. I'm more of a blues/rock guy.

So something like this?

I'm pretty sure with that I would be satisfied since most of my favorite bands use it, my only question if, would it still sound like crap with the MG's cab?
