i read an articel that suggested brian may wacked the knobs on his valve amp right up to maximum and controlled volume from his guitar knobs. the article suggested this causes a natural valve distortion which is a nice sound.
i was wondering, is this correct??
what is the thinking on this??
will this wear the tubes out quicker??

Tube OD does sound great. Altho using your guitar knobs for volume will be pretty sensitive. And the tubes are gonna be running hotter, so it might shorten the life, but not signifigantly.

You could also have an outboard volume control like a pedal.
Out here you've gotta know where your towel is!

yeah tube amps break up under high volume...thats called overdrive distortion....thats what bands back in the day used to use before there were gain knobs, distortion pedals or dirty channels on amps. the first distorted electric guitar sound was produced by slicing the cone on an amp. i forget what song...
