my friend is having a party in about 2 weeks, and i need a good list of a handful or so fairly popular songs that we can play there.

it will be me and my friend, me on electric guitar/vocals, him on bass/guitar/vocals.
its gonna be a fairly casual thing, but basically the deal is we have to play popular songs for about half of it, and then for the last half we can play whatever we want (ie songs weve written, improv etc)

well for the popular song part i need ideas for songs that can be played with just me and my friend with the aformented instruments, any ideas? it would be good if they arent too hard to play, and can be sung while playing too.

sorry bout the long post, i need help!
nothing.

This might be kinda useless, but I would seriously recommend finding a drummer. Makes it so much easier, IMO.
#5
doesnt matter about drums, these people like whatevers popular really, anything kinda like oasis n stuff
nothing.
#6
Tribute!! Everyone knows it, everyone loves it and it's fairly easy to do without drums and easy to sing/play at the same time and everyone can sing along.

This man is wiser than he first appears. Guitar Hero stuff is generally reasonably popular. Although, songs like Through The Fire And The Flames are bad for two reasons: one, the casual music listener won't know them, and two they're pretty much impossible to play unless you practice them for aaaaaages. Things like Miss Murder ect. are good songs, even though I dislike AFI.

Lawl I have to agree. Another one I just thought of is Holy Grail. It's like, 5 chords. Piece of cake.

Paranoid, Whole Lotta Love and Nothing Else Matters. How about that. :P

Smells like teen spirit, really easy, with easy solo, uh.... Smoke on the water? Any Beatles song? Slowride, bij Faghot, Alive by Pearl Jam? Enter Sandman (it has quite a heavy bass)? Killing in the Name (also very nice, heavy bass)?
#22
RHCP, if you`re bassist can do it. (Under the Bridge and stuff)
Audioslave - Be Yourself (Change the verse riff into chords if it`s to hard)
SEVEN NATION ARMY! For sure.
Wonderwall from Oasis maybe
Blur - Song 2
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters?
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple (Solo can also just be improv. in Gm scale)
Smells Like Teen Spirit/Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana
Something from Foo Fighters

Just songs that everybody knows. Maybe Eye of the Tiger riff and then a massive solo

Play CD's. It will turn out better than just you and a friend playing?
Under the bridge is a pretty easy going song to do with 2 people.

maybe some indie ?

Kaiser Chiefs & Arctic Monkeys have some nice and easy tunes that are played alot on tv and radio + alot of theyre songs are populair so people will sing along and that creates a nice vibe so people wont gonna gt bored or something

If it's a generic piss-up, then you've got either the slower stuff like Wonderwall or more upbeat stuff like Buck Rogers. Stay as mainstream as possible.

Enter Sandman = not mainstream I'm afraid.

This is essential: songs that guitarists think are mainstream such as Smoke on the Water and Paranoid ARE NOT MAINSTREAM IN THE EYES OF EVERYBODY ELSE. Stick to generic Pop-Punk and Indie unless you know the party-goers like other stuff.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - NIrvana
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Free Bird (minus solo unless you're a very fast learner) - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple

Very easy songs (except Free bird solo)

Haha, Blitzkrieg Bop. I remember that song. Good times.

Alright, lemme wrack my brains for some more songs with just guitar and bass. Problem is to do punk/rock/anything upbeat really you NEED drums, otherwise it just sounds empty.

Under The Bridge is a good idea. Ummmm... I'm out of ideas. =(

Sweet Child O' Mine by GNR, not too hard, great song, and is very well known. If the solo gets too tricky could always shorten or improvise.
