Lots of threads talk about awful distortion or the need for pedals with a valveking 112 to get a hard metal sound...

what other options are there for around about the same price?

Must have at least two channels, a good clean channel (no crackly or semi distorted cleans like the randall practice amps), and must be around $1000 AUS...

thanks in advance.

the distortion on the valve king is great aslong as you fine tune the settings if your a retard with no idea how to get a decent tone then it will suck.

Agreed. Check YouTube for some fine samples. Don't just believe what people tell you. Listen for yourself.

Yesterday I found out how much better my Valveking sounds with the eq in the effects loop instead of in front. A lot more "cutting" tone.

Laney VC15 etc.

urrmm...difficult to say- its difficult to get good gain on valve amps at this price range- but smaller valve combos tend to be the way ahead!!!!
