So today is my birthday, and I got money. The guitar I am planning to blow my wad on....I mean spend my wad of cash on....is a 1980 Epiphone Strat copy. As of now I've installed Gotoh locking tuners, and a Wilkinson VSVG trem. I am very disappointed with the trem, but what I really hate about this guitar is the pickups and the noise in general. Does anyone think it would be worth shelling out around $200 for two Dimarzio Area '58 pickups and a Dimarzio Area '61 for my plywood play thing? I love the tone it has now, but the thing is just so noisy. Also, can anyone reccomend another Strat style trem for me to look into? Thanks for the help, kids.

It's one of the best playing guitars I've ever played, and I think it sounds pretty good. Who cares what wood it is?

As already mentioned, shielding the cavities will help quiet it a bit: http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/shielding/shield3.php

Replacing the pot and switch of inexpensive guitars will usually be worth the few $$$ and while you're at it, check out some of the inexpensive PUs at GF:

Electronics: http://store.guitarfetish.com/electronics.html
PUs: http://store.guitarfetish.com/pickups.html

If you're intent on installing the DMs, and I can't blame you, at least upgrade the pots and switch!

Cavities are all shielded, but the 28 year old hardware doesn't help much. Would 250k pots be a good choice? I've heard that 500k can make single coils sound way too bright, and it is already a plywood guitar.
