Well, kind of a spin-off of the "movies with complicated and intellectual plots" thread.

Which games do you consider to have intellectual plots?
Or which ones that make you think outside of the plot, whether they are complicate or not?

For me they would be:

Planetscape:Torment-Deals with so many philosophical aspects it is not funny, and what is best is that you create the plot (apart from the usual main one which you can't change). It is very fantasious though.

Legacy of Kain-Apart from the whole action and vampire stuff, it has a great plot. I think it has one of the theories of time travel that makes most sense.

I am missing some other ones though...

Xenogears. The background plot alone covers some thousands of years of history and ranges from topics like politics, religion, technology, corporations, love...

I thought I was the only one on the planet who played that game.

Instead of telling the people who have never played it how good it is, i'll just say this: I have completed it many, many times. And am not bored of it.

Try quests. Syberia 1, Syberia 2 are among the bests. They're more like a bright and sad tale about a dream.

Among my favourite games the best storyline (not necessarily 'intellectual per say') are Mafia and The Witcher. I love The Witcher in particular. I was so dissapointed when I finished the game.

morrowind? even oblivion?

they are kinda open ended plots and alot of room between them, but i always found them interesting. i actually would actually try to find a big library in the game and sit and read a bunch of the books....as lame as that sounds

Zelda games in general have amazing storylines.

Ocarina Of Time especially. But I liked the Wind Waker plot too.

And I guess the Halo storylines are pretty good too.

Oblivions plot summed up

*spoilers*

Emperor dies
Locate until now unknown heir
Research random cult that murdered emperor
Find crap to open magical hole
Climb into magical hole and defeat weak cult leader
Big monster attacks, heir turns into dragon and kills it

*spoilers*

Sounds pretty basic tbh.

I think he meant the actual stories within the game. Some of those novels are long. I forgot how many are in the games.

Xenogears has the greatest story I've ever seen in a video game, and I'm not just saying that because it's my favorite. I've got about 5,000 hours of rpg's under my belt and no game has ever come close.

Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1 Version, Need to play PSP version.)
Beyond Good and Evil
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Golden Sun (on GBA)

Seriously, this game was written better than any of the movies. Best plot in a game I've ever played.

Beyond Good and Evil

Very true. Ubisoft makes some excellent storylines. Within a stretch, I think Assasin's Creed plotline was somewhat intellectual.

SPOILER

The whole future memory machine thing was kind of stupid though.
