i got this book that shows you all the scales. it just shows the C major scale (startin on the 3rd fret 5th string) if i move that note down to the 4th string on the 3rd fret, does that make it an F major ....or can only do that whole/half step thing?

Yes, until you hit that pesky B string. In which case move everything up a fret basically.

That would make it F Lydian it's not about shapes it's about what notes you hit.

To keep it simple, you would find the F note on the A string and then play the pattern starting at that F note.

But, there are around 12 different patterns for the major scale. Well atleast practical patterns.
