Current members:

* King Diamond (Kim Bendix Petersen) - vocals, keyboard
* Mike Wead (Mikael Wikström) - guitar
* Hank Shermann (Rene Krolmark) - guitar, bass guitar
* Bjarne T. Holm (Bob Lance) - drums
* Sharlee D'Angelo (Charles Peter Andreason) - bass guitar

The band was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1980 from the remaining members of Hank Shermann's band Brats and King Diamond's band Black Rose. In early 1981 they helped out Michael Denner with demos for his band Danger Zone. Soon, Shermann, Denner, Diamond, and Denner's bass player Timi Grabber realized their potential as a unit and started performing as Mercyful Fate. The band experienced the usual member changes for a new band, as Denner left (and later returned). In addition, the drummer position was a revolving door, but Kim Ruzz finally established himself as the drummer.

In early 1982, the band contributed to the Ebony Records sampler Metallic Storm. Later on in the year, Mercyful Fate recorded their first material, Nuns Have No Fun, on vinyl for the Dutch label Rave On. The release included heavy and evil material that would later inspire the black metal genre (although Venom and Bathory are as equally considered as the forefathers of black metal).

Following the EP, the band released Melissa in 1983 and Don't Break the Oath in 1984, which are now considered by many to be classics in both the power metal and black metal genres. Following the tour (which saw them play in the United States for the first time) in support of Don't Break the Oath, Diamond split ways with Mercyful Fate in April 1985 as a result of frustration over creative differences with Hank Shermann. With him, Diamond brought band mates Hansen and Denner to found a new band under his own name. Diamond's new venture continued the tradition of Mercyful Fate, but with a more progressive, conceptual twist to it. In response, Hank Shermann formed the band Fate, which pursued a more AOR direction.

Discuess Mercyful Fate here. I checked, and there were no threads on this band. My current favorite song is "Buried Alvie".

Awesome band, you really didn't need to put all that info up. And I think there already is a Mercyful Fate thread anyway.

Great band, I recently got a reissue of Melissa with a DVD. Don't Break the Oath is my favourite though

I'm listening to that one right now. Great album. A Dangerous Meeting is probably my favorite song on that one.

A Dangerous Meeting is great but its not as good as Desecration Of Souls, The Oath or Come to the Sabbath

Into the Coven is my favorite.

Yeah man, the intro to that song is just so cool. And it adds to its coolness that it is on the RIAA's 'top 15 dirtiest' list (or whatever it was called).

good band, although i don't have too much of their stuff. i need to get around to getting a disco at some point.

Mercyful Fate, along with Venom and Bathory, are the absolute peak of black metal. No modern band even comes close in terms of sheer evilness.
And the Hank Sherman/Michael Denner duo is easily as good as Downing/Tipton and Murray/Smith, if not better.

Anyone ever heard Brats, Shermans/Denners band that King joined to form Fate?

Sorry, but MF and Venom were not black metal. Bathory are protoblack. I can think of a few bands that are more evil, I don't know what you mean by 'modern' though (ie what year). The first one that comes to mind is Infester (94). Mayhem - Deathcrush and Bestial Summoning - The Dark War Has Begun are imo the peak of black metal.

1st wave, proto black, whichever you want to call it, I think of that first at the mention of 'black metal', over anything after that.
Sure, by todays standards they aren't 'black metal', but then neither are Hell, Evil, or early Death SS, who I would say were all much more 'black' than bloody Xasthur or somthing

To me, Mercyful Fate are particualy 'evil' because not only were they genuienly behind their lyrics, unlike Venom for example, but the bands chemistry was such that they could create moments, and indeed entire songs, of total sublime darkness, like when the main riff of Into the Coven kicks in, and The Oath.

But whatever, I'm too tired to be bothered discussing genre semantics.

Arguing that MF is black metal is not genre semantics. Clearly they are not. Nor were Hell, Evil or early Death SS, or Venom. You can't make your own definition of black metal, there already is one, and it isn't those bands

The definition of black metal has obviously changed since then, all those bands were called black metal back in the day. But I don't really give a toss, MF are wicked, end of.

I was hearing a lot of buzz about this band from metal heads a while back, so I thought I would check them out. So I go to youtube, look up one of there videos, and then I start headbanging to the awesome instrumental work, then King D starts singing. Man.....it's like looking at a chick with a hot body and then she turns around to reveal a nasty and hideous face. I know people will probably hate me for saying that, but his singing is just annoying. Crap, it's friggin' comical!

Mercyful Fate is to Black Metal what Black Sabbath is to Heavy Metal. Come on, even the lead singers of both bands left, started their own band, then reunited with the original.

I've been digging these guys lately for some reason, though never being a huge fan of King Diamond.

I'm torn...I prefer the vocals of Mercyful Fate, but I also prefer the guitaring of KD over these guys.

Still on topic, Diamond has some wicked mutton chops in the video for "Witches' Dance."

I guess it's all chance. I first heard MF back in my freshman year and my first reaction was "FOOKIN' METULLL!"

The King's voice is simply astounding, so get used to it. The falsettos are great and his mid-low voice is so...evil.

I do love his voice, when I said "King Diamond" I meant the band as opposed to just the person, sorry for the confusion.

No need to call, the nekrokastrator is everywhere he is needed... Unless I'm not on and the thread gets closed before I get back...

So anyway, yeah, Mercyful Fate kick insane amounts of ass. Do you guys prefer Melissa or Don't Break the Oath? I personally prefer Melissa by a bit, but Don't Break the Oath is still easily one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Melissa just has something really special about it to me... it's really hard to explain.
