What is the biggest factor in the sustain of your guitar?

Despite popular believe. I'm going to say the neck-joint.

The strings start at the bridge on a body and end on a whole other piece of wood. If the neck-joint isn't well constructed your sustain will suffer greatly.

Keep in mind that while it is true that bolt-on necks have weaker sustain than set necks or neck throughs they can still have a great amount of sustain if done properly.

Construction. For sustain:

neck thru > set neck > bolt-on

string thru body > Les Paul bridge > PRS trem > Fender trem > Floyd Rose

After that comes tonewood.

Though you can get a load of sustain with a lot of volume and decent gain, with a sustainer pedal like a Boss CS-3 or EHX Big Muff.

your bridge, then the wood(species/mass of wood), then tunners/nut, then your fingers, then your strings. IMO

Besides the neck joint, part would depend on what the body is made of and the weight, also the type of bridge.

Not sure if your looking for a total over-view or just a few tricks/tips for increasing it?
if its tricks/tips then effective use of distortion will help a hell of a lot, also a proper set-up will help a bit.
people with large sig's are clearly compensating for something.
#7
ive also heard that a big block greatly helps with the sustain of a floyd rose.
#8
^ It won't make it sustain better than a guitar with a fixed bridge, though, even if the Floyd Rose-equipped guitar has a mahogany body.

Someone who worked at a guitar shop by my house had my try out a Jackson with a Sustainex pickup or something... it was pretty awesome... you could sustain a not forever.

So if you want sustain just get that pickup.

^ Yeah, there's the Fernandes Sustainer system as well, unless that's what you're talking about.

type of neck joint, string-thru body or not, shape of body, body wood, shape of headstock, yeah.

body wood, neck joint, and bridge.

Probably the 3 biggest factors (in no particular order).

Not forget it, I just think the 3 I mentioned have a little bit more effect on the sustain than does the height of your pickups.

I have no experience to refute your comment, but it most certainly has some effect, whether or not its as great as the other factors I can't say, but if you lower your pickups the guitar will sustain better.

A well constructed bolt-on guitar can have as much sustain as a neck through or set neck guitar.

Yes, you are correct, there is some effect in the raising or lowering of your pickup height. But from my experience, it is not quite as great a factor as the 3 that I mentioned earlier.

Raising your pickups will have the effect that the magnets will pull the wire more. If anything it will kill the sustain.
