What bands/artists do you see today that will make a big difference in the future of music? In other words, what bands do you see way down the road from now you will still remember and listen to on the oldies stations in 2040 and be like, "that will never get old" and "if it wasn't for them, the bands today would have nothing to work with".

Muse probably. Which is a shame. As much as I love Muse, they are too unique to take much influence from.

I'd say Muse definitely.
I'd say some indie bands like Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs will be remembered for a long time too. May not seem it at the moment but they've been really influential.

Trent Reznor will definitely be remembered for a long time.

Bright Eyes

Conor Oberst in general, everything he touches will be help a lot of people.

I'm with IC on this.
Hoping for more epically amazing stuff like Ne Obliviscaris and Opeth to be the next big "Metallica" or "Iron Maiden". The bands that always get referenced by every band

Red Hot Chili Peppers, hopefully.

I figure they're already held in the 'highly influential' status...

Whitestripes? Or atleast Jack! You can say what you want, but he is the one that have pushed the art off guitarplaying a little forward in these times.

Hopefully bands like Biffy Clyro will be used to show how bands can make it on their own terms.

Mars Volta to show that there is a market for intricate and complicated music.

But to the point where they'd be listened to in 2040? That is the question

To be honest no bands these days stand out to me as influencial. There are no bands around like they used to be, bands like the Stones, and Aerosmith. They were HUGE, and still are. But theres no bands around now that have the same hype that these older bands had back when they were in their prime.

Maybe SOAD, RHCP, Children of Bodom, BTBAM, Muse, Mastadon, Necrophagist, and Wolfmother.
Also, whether you like them or not, there are probably going to bands that cite MCR, Fallout Boy, and Panic at the Disco as influences.

Radiohead.

It took until page 2 for Radiohead to be mentioned? (Yes, I realise they've been mentioned multiple times since the above post).

I cannot think of a single other modern/recent band that is anywhere near Radiohead in terms of of the combination of commercial success, popularity and artistic credibility and experimentation.

EDIT: Sorry, I meant to be more explicit in pointing out that the dual achievement of popularity and artistic experimentation seem to me to be the things that give a band staying power.
