I was under the impression that the Bugeras already had insane amounts of gain?

same but on second thought, could i use it as an overdrive and then a portable pre-amp, when needed for other things?

in short: would it be a sensible investment?

They do, and that's precisely why it would be overkill.

Take it with a grain of salt though, I'm not all that high gain after all.

I don't really see the point. What are you trying to accomplish?
I'm sure the 333XL has more gain than this (it only has 2 tubes).
You could do some gain staging but stacking 2 mediocre preamps might not give the best results (not an expert here, but you should first try it before buying).
If anything, I would buy a separate power amp and use the Bugera's preamp.

The amount of tubes doesn't directly result in more gain you know. Although I believe the 333XL has enough gain for anything.

Why would you want to if you already have a 5150 ?
If I were you I would AB my amps and use the Bugeras clean and crunch and the Peavey's lead.

or just get an amp that's made for clean and crunch instead of getting a metal-voiced amp

Personally I think that the Bugera is cheaply made. If you're going with the Gainiac, why not buy a decent valve power amp and have a rack amp?
...

Why on earth would you do that? The Bugera is already great, and has more gain than anyone could possibly need. If you're gonna buy a dedicated preamp, buy a dedicated power amp as well, not another whole amp. That's just a waste.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish, anyway?

from expereince stay away from the gainiac. it sounds like crap IMO. the 333XL has alot more gain then the Gainiac 2. there is no reason the get that unless you were running a rack set up or just have really crappy overdrive on the amp. but the 333xl has more then enough gain on it, the gainiac would be OVERKILL for sure.

If you want more gain, just swap the EL34's out for 6L6's - which is what came stock in my 333 2x12 combo. And while you're at it, make sure they're Tung-Sols...don't get no better.
