what interface are you running into and what instruments are you recording?
If you dont have an interface, a DI box isnt the proper way to record...

but since you asked, I prefer the Studio Projects VTB1

An audio interface is a piece of hardware which bypasses your stock sound card, (which was never made to record in the first place) and gives you great results.

Read the stickies at the top of the page and view the UG recording videos.

Interfaces usually have different style inputs such as XLR for mics, and 1/4" for instruments. Some interfaces such as the line6 Toneports are made so you can DI right to the interface. The more you spend on an interface, the better results you get.

Read though tweaks guide linked in my sig and more spec. this section:

If you are only going to record 2 mics at one time max., go with a USB type interface. If you want to record more than two mics at any point you'll want to go with a firewire interface.
