well..i think you would lose a lot of control on the down stroke....so, probably not the best idea, i keep mine at an angle, half way between perfectly vertical and perfectly horizontal; works best imo.

thats how i pick most of the time, and it actually doesn't diminish attack (at least not for normal picking) for sweeping i use normal picking, but thats because i trained myself to do it. sideways picking would work.

^^^yeah i do it this way too
i tried sideways for a little but it just didnt have any attack to it at all
but i guess if its the sound you're going for, go ahead.
but if you havent, you should try it at an angle.
