there's no such thing as cheating in music.
if it gives a sound you think you want, do it.
#9
Gives me the urge to run over to my friend Tommy's, grab some mikes, and run it through my amp.

Would that even work?

Do you mean putting a vocal through a guitar amp? Chances are it'll sound awful.
#13
It's "cheating," meaning it's not how it's always done, but it can be done in a way where it's say only the vocals happening and the volume is down, before breaking into another riff or something. I think BMFV does that in "Four Words to Choke Upon."

listen to the 'solo' in muscle museum by muse...

...not screaming, but vocals through distortion non-the-less
#17
personally, i think its cheating. all vocals should be what you can do, not what a pedal does for you

Yeah I've tried it... Watch out for feedback. It does sound kinda cool though. Actually here a link to a vocal solo done with distortion and wah. http://artists.ultimate-guitar.com/kalamazoo/
It's the one called Gabe's Vocal Solo.

You should read the phoneticaly spelled guitar riffs thread in that voice.

My view on it is do what you need to do to create the sound in your head

If it is used tastefully and effectively, then there's nothing wrong with it.

But you shouldn't use it every song.

ACTUALLY....When I jam with my band we use a bass amp for the vocals.

I use distortion on clean vocals, but if you use it on screaming, it will just sound like horrible noise.

Nothing is cheating on a recording. There's no way to cheat in getting a sound you want. However, be prepared to let people down live.

...Doesn't mean it sounds good. I didn't say it was impossible to do.

Bass amps are designed for bass guitars.

Vocal amps are designed for vocals.
