When people talk about troops in Iraq and such; whatever they have to say about them, good or bad, they always commend them for 'protecting the country'.

But, I always wonder, what do they really mean by 'protecting the country'? Do they mean it in the sense that troops are invading foreign countries that they see as a 'threat' to America?

Maybe because I'm quite tired but this just came across my mind. I'll probably look back on this later and laugh at myself.
Protecting which country? America or Iraq?

They're protecting America by reeling in the oil and Iraq by "bringing them democracy".
