ive been playing for about 2 years now and im upgrading my guitar from an epiphone g310 sg to most likely some kind of epiphone les paul around the 600-700 price range.

i normally play some grunge or classic rock or even alot of clean sounding stuff like sublime and red hot chili peppers and i want to get something that sounds good in those areas.....i dont play heavy metal or death metal or w/e at all

i really want a les paul but im for sure open to anything else that looks good and also plays well.

i was thinkin of getting that guitar but im not sure cause ive heard emg pickups are geared toward heavy metal. also its kind of gothic looking

if i could get some suggestions thatd be really helpful

81/85s... and not playing Metal? I recommend Plain Alnico 5's by your choices.. EMGs dont really sound good without a good amount of distortion.. really I'd recommend an Agile 3000/3100 they are quite nice guitars and should be able to play Clean and that Mild Distortion your hoping to Achieve Great.. http://www.rondomusic.com/product1005.html
they have different models and colors but thats one of my favorites..

EMG's can do basically anything you want them to. I use them and don't play much metal.

I've seen Epi Les Paul Elitists go used for your price range. Check 'em out.

I'm hearing a steady *thump thump* from the people above me and I need some porno grooves to play on my bass to give them some background music. Any ideas?

Thank you for putting that out there

EMGs can do anything you want....I honestly dont think they are the best for
metal...I love them for blues and hard rock...I dont think that insane metal
is their strongest area...

WHAT!??? EMG's sound like ****! They have the worst tone ever imaginable and they only sound half decent when pumped full of distortion. They are not versatile at all and are geared mainly towards metal!

Apparently there's another case of two people on UG with different ears. What a suprise.

I never heard EMG's through Mild Distortion as I said.. the ones I played I only Played through High Gain and they did indeed sound great.. as for cleans I felt they were Substandard.. but I picked up the guitar for 20 minutes and set it down as there was no way for me to afford a Jackson with EMG's so I shouldn't really judge.. but I do not think they have a terrible tone.. hell with High Distortion it made that Bandit I was playing Scream.. I only tried them never owned nor played around with em.. so I couldn't give an exact idea of the tone I can just say with High Gain distortion It Rocks through Cleans from what it gave me a bit substandard.. and once again never heard them through a Low-Mid amount of Distortion..

just looked that up
the features pretty sick

The Ultras are nice guitars, but remember that it's almost completely hollow inside, so the tone is more like an archtop guitar (Dot, ES-335, etc), rather than like a Les Paul. Especially with the Ultra-II when you use the NanoMag pickup.
Yes, I know everything. No, I can't play worth a damn.

The prophecy line is more for metal so if you don't play metal... But they're still nice guitars and an excellent choice. However I would recommend that if you do get them then try the GX with the dirty fingers instead of EMGs

Michael Kelly Patriot

Superior guitars across the board than the Epi LPs.

those are little cheap but they sound nice...id have to test one out first

I agree with the statements above saying EMG's are pretty versatile. If you run them through a good amp you can get really nice cleans. I love the things, they can do everything I want and they don't give out when you really pump the distortion.

But I think if you're gonna get an Epi LP in that price range you should either look at the GX Prophecy or get a really high end agile, you'll even have cash left if you get the Agile. They're great guitars, don't worry about how you've never heard of them. The 3100 I played was comparable of a Gibson standard I played at GC and it's like $400 I think compared to the Gibson which is MUCH more expensive.
