so im reading choke by chuck palahniuk (the author of fight club) and let me tell you, pit, that is one strange book. but then again, the pit is one strange place. if any of you have read this book, you know how messed up it can get.

so anyways, im reading it in thursday class (which is saturday class held on thursday, for those of you who dont know) and my friend is sitting in front of me. she asks what book it is, and i tell her. i also tell her how wierd it is (im only like five or six chapters into the book at this point).

so sometime during the class she takes the book from me and starts reading it. she gets through the first chapter, then starts reading the second. then she asks me

"whats auto-erotic asphyxiation?"

i tried to keep from ing. i told her she didnt want to know, but she said she really did. so i told her. she was all like "" and i was like " told you you didnt want to know"

anyways she keeps on reading and she stumbles upon something else that somehow catches her interest:

"what are latex beads?"

again, i told her she didnt want to know. for some reason though, she kept asking till i told her. i wrote really small on the paper "anal stimulation" and she was like "how?" i was like "good god use your imagination". again, written very large and underlined, "HOW?" so i told her to ask a gay guy.

she said "thats what im doing "

i saw that one coming. she does that often. then she folds the note and puts it in her pocket.

so anyways i take out another paper and the conversation continues but its completely unrelated to the story.

so, has anyone else in the pit read this book? ive gotten further since then, and im not gonna lie, while being incredibly weird at some times, its actually a really interesting book. opinions?

Insane book, I love it. On the whole it's better than Haunted, but the first story of Haunted (Guts) is great. If people in my house are bored, I give them that small chapter to read.

However I don't think either are as good as Fight Club.

Cool, I've read Chuck Palahniuk's Haunted; I'm now reading Lullaby, it's proving to be quite a read.
There's going to be a movie on this book Choke isn't there? I think I'm gonna read the book before the movie opens.

ive read all his books and survivor has to be the best in my opinion. I wish they would make it into a film, it would be so goddamn random

but yeah Guts is always a fun chapter to read!

and the ending of Choke really did suck

The film's been made and premiered at a Canadian film festival, but it's public release will be end of August this year.

The scenes I've seen look great.

I liked Chuck's books until I read Invisible Monsters (which is supposed to be his best) and I just thought "this is some pretentious ****."

Now Irvine Welsh is my "shocking" author of choice.

Trainspotting is good, so is Glue.

I'd start with those two.

i have about 85 pages left of this book. it's definitely a good book, but it's not as great as i thought it was going to be. i appreciate palahniuk's sarcasm, but i don't really like how the novel jumps around so much.

as for the movie, doesn't the guy who plays victor seem too old? in the book he's a med school dropout, but he looks at least 35 in the movie.

I got about 60% through the book and did what I always do with a book... forget about it and let my mind drift off to something more interesting.

...ooooOOOooo... something shinny!

Its a good book the only one of his I could never get through was Diary. Just way to confusing.
#25
One of my favourite books of all time. Can't wait for the film. You might want to read Survivor as well, equally awesome. Palahniuk is all round awesome.
#26
Yeah, 'twas alright.
My favorite Chuck Palahniuk book is Survivor, that's the book that deserves a film, imo.

I'm in the process of finishing up his books. I've read most already, I'm finishing Rant which was pretty good then I've got stranger than fiction and I'm done. So far Fight Club was the best, then choke, then survivor tied with lullaby. Diary was confusing as hell but alright if you get through it. Didn't like haunted. and ya choke has a great ending imo. It was completely unexpected. Choke is weird at times but still good. It doesn't even come close to Guts though, the first story in Haunted. That **** is messed up.

I find some Palanhuik books to be a bit confusing. The ones that enjoy though are the most genius books i have ever read. Fight club, Survivor and Rant, i probably enjoyed 100x more than any film i've seen.

Anyhow, Choke was ok, Rant is my favourite of his. Weird as hell.

Well I had liked what I read, I just didn't feel like finishing the book. It's right in front of me with the page bookmarked. Don't feel like reading it.

Yeah thats the only one I genuinely liked. I thought the fight club book was pretty ****e (ending was crap) and the film was better. Couldnt finish Diary because it was so boring, and Invisible Monsters was so pretentious and stupid I just gave up. Haunted was good but really inconsistant, there were a few great stories (guts and that lifelike doll one) but most were below par.

Definitely his best book. The script was picked up and started to be worked on but then 9/11 happened and since the whole premise of the book is the gut hi-jacking a plane and confessing to the black box it was deemed inappropriate and was put on hold indefinitely. Hopefully it will be worked on again soon.

Wow, people who appreciate literature on UG, I never though I would see it.

Yes, I have read Choke and it is good, but I have to agree that the ending could have been better. I think Survivor and Fight Club would be tied for his best works though.

And DanRev, good choice with Irvine Welsh, he is also very good.

For all of you, I would recommend Bret Easton Ellis as an author to look up.
