I have been playing for about a year and a half and used the hell out of the 5 basic scales and chromatic scale. I constantly go back and for with a metronome going. I want more exercises that'd help me get into shredding and improv. So, yeah, what do you guys suggest?
John Petrucci's "Rock Discipline."

Question: What exactly are these "5 basic scales" you're refering to ?
I've basically gotten to a point where I want something new to progress faster. I don't know if I am progressing or not. I just need some more techniques and exercises to get better. I want to be able to improvise.
Learn the main riff from power metal from pantera. Its hard to understand at first but once you slow down the song on windows media player you can understand everything. Another great exercise but much harder in trilogy suit op 5 by yngwie malmsteen. Learn it using guitar pro and strat b playng slowly.
