EMGs and Seymore Duncans are best for metal because they give you a nice, Hi-Gain tone. i prefer EMG 81s and SD's Blackouts because they're active, and great for basically any metal.
LTD KH-602
Schecter Hellraiser C-8
Bugera 333X
Pedalboard:
Boss TU-2, HM-2
EHX Big Muff Pi w/ Tone Wicker
Crybaby From Hell
Way Huge Swollen Pickel
DeviEver: Legend of Fuzz
MXR Phase 90 Script, Carbon Copy, MC-401

EMGs ROCK!
Very good for metal and high gain stuff.
They are also very quiet when you arent playing which is a big plus for me

Everyone likes different pickups. EMGs are like by metal players because they have a low signal to noise reation, and a lot of attack with a pretty high output. Not to mention all the nifty little EQ cicuits you can add on to them.

for a $150 amp yours isnt that bad.you will notice a deforence with emgs.
not to say that a new amp wouldnt make a bigger deforence .
its your jack though, spend it how you want.

answer to the question, what do they really do?
"A pickup device acts as a transducer that captures mechanical vibrations (usually from suitably equipped stringed instruments such as the electric guitar, electric bass guitar or electric violin) and converts them to an electrical signal, which can be amplified and recorded." best suits what I would say.
GEAR:
Epiphone LP special model 2 (Heavily modded - killswitch and custom midi X-Y touch pad).
Digitech Whammy, Zvex Fuzz Factory, Boss Dynamic Wah, Electro harmonix Little Big Muff, Zoom G7.1ut, Digitech Grunge, Korg KP2.
Marshall AVT 50x
