im just beggining to get into using cubase, but what id essentially like to do, instead of buggering around with advanced techniques so soon, is use a program like guitar pro or sibelius to "write a song" and export it in MIDI format, and then import this into cubase, applying certain synths/instruments to the music. How can i do this?

No, just coincidence.

I think if you import the midi to Cubase you can add more midi instruments, or use a VST to synthesize a sound, but you'll need to play about with your latency. Maybe ask in the recording forum, you might get a better response.
