so today i went to jam with some friends and it was the first time id be able to turn my amp up actually past 2.5.
but once i got to 4, the sound would just keep breaking up and made a very unpleasant noise as if the speakers were cutting in and out, very inconsistent, i fooled with all the knobs to see and nothing helped.
im guessing i need to replace the power tubes?
i don't know much about amp problems, i've never really had them before.

and just to clarify, this wouldn't be any problem with the speaker would it?

Unless you see any rips in the speaker cone (be sure to check), it most likely isn't the speakers .

Check if any of the power tubes arent lighting up, or arent glowing as strongly as others. Just make sure it is the power tubes before you buy new ones, although as DiMeTiMe said, it cant hurt

That is text book of a bad tube. Take it to a tech and get fresh Tubes.

Definitely bad power tubes. When it starts doing it, look in the back at the power tubes and I'd be willing to bet you'd see some kind of color change, usually a blue starting at the tip.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

ahh and the guyi bought the amp from just replaced them, so i ordered some JJ's today and all should be well.
but i also am getting kind of an overwhelming buzz, even while im playing, usually its only heard when im not playing, but its gotten worse.
is this also do to the power tubes?
(this is at low volumes like .5)

If you aren't running a noise gate with the 5150, you are gonna get massive hum and/or feedback.

it just started today.

If it gets sort of buzzy and the tone deteriorates, it really couldn't hurt to have the pots cleaned and get new inputs when you get that amp retubed.
