need a new EL84 power tube for blackheart and i would prefer it not to be a re-branded Sovtek. but at the same time i don't wanna spend an arm and leg.

one that i've been looking at is the Mullard EL84, tho i MITE spend an extra $10 or $15 on the JJs. don't want to if the mullards sound good but might. i don't have a lot to play w/ here so any input is appreciated.

Mullards are cheaper than JJs? Since when!?

Mullard makes a good tube, as does JJ. Just depends if you want your amp to be more dark voiced (generally with JJs) or not.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

well these are mullard POWER el84 tubes, i believe it's their NOS PREAMP tubes that carry most their fame. but i went ahead and purchased a pair of JJs from dougstubes. i went in the store yesterday and they said they could easily order them. they threw out prices like startin at $30 for Sovteks (HATE them) and $60 or more for the good sounding ones.... i was like "i didn't think they'd be that expensive". all i said was that i needed ONE replaced so i don't think they were giving me prices of Quads or anything...if they did then that'd make a lot more sense.

JJs seem to have the most appealing tone for me power tube wise

though if i can get a couple of mullard preamp tubes i prolly will...cuz i'm still running off Sovtek one. gotta wait for another paycheck before i spend another $20 roughly on an amp tube set.

thank you much for your help though, can't wait to hear the tonal difference though i'm sure it'll be best when i get the preamp changed too

Spend the extra ching is well worth it in the long run. The new mullard 12ax7 are great tubes. And you can't go wrong with jj. Check out the tube depot make sure there matched. I also order low harmonics with late break up.
