If you had one Squier vintage modified jazz or precision bass and $500, and you wanted to customize it/add new parts.
Its not like I have any of that, but I was just courious.

Halfbucker?

And 500quid is like 750 USD considering you people have to pay a bit more than us Americans.

if I actually preferred up grading to buying a new bass, I would probably put a Badass bridge, a second pickup (MM style) on it, and active electronics. If I had any left from bargaining down the dealers, I'd get a detuner.
probably I would do these to the P-bass.

or, I would sell the bass, and use the 650 bucks to get me an Ibanez sr530 or a Fender P-special or used American P-bass or something like that.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

Halfbucker?

It's a name I'm giving to a kind of single coil I've got an idea of trying to make. Not sure whether it will work or not though!

I'd strip the paint rout for a P pickup and make the bridge j rout larger for a MM pickup. Then, Repaint it black, add a dimarzio Split Humbucker thing, a MM, and a J pickup in their respective spots, and add a preamp or detuner if there was any money left.

Well, all will be revealed once my exams are over and I've had time to make some prototypes.

well i have a VM p bass and the potential of this bass(agathis BTW) is exteme IMO the sound acustcaly is great and i am currently modding it with some cheap upgrades but if i had the money i would do this

BAII bridge
Quarter Pounder pup(already done)
New strings(already done, the stock ones in most squiers suck)
Schaller Straplocks(already done)
Dimarzio Pots and Orange Drop Cap
Nut, not sure wich one yet
and i have heard storys that redoing the neck-body joint helps a lot with sustain

thats all i can think right now
My Gear

Squier VM p-bass(i chosed it over a fender!!!) with quarter pounder and gotoh 201!!
fender MIM P bass
epiphone SG 400

This. You could probably be looking at a HW1 or possible a MIA second hand if you sold the VM for a decent price and added that to the $500.

everything you probably would do to the Squier is already included with the HW1.
Or you could take the $500 and invest in an amp or even lessons. Its amazing how a good bass player can make a cheap bass sound amazing.
