racism is bad?
I want to go as far to the edge without going over. Out on the edge, you can see all kinds of different things.

So basically you got nothing whatsoever out of the book...

There's a few.

When Scout witnesses the harsh racism of the ordinary and seemingly nice people of Maycomb County towards Tom Robinson, she realizes that the world is not always fair and that people are sometimes not seen as equals.

When Atticus tells Jem and Scout about Mrs. Duboses' morphine addiction and how her last hope was to die free from the grip of it, Atticus says:

Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.

Which basically means that even if you know you can't succeed, you should try anyways. It ties back into Atticus' trial in the sense that he defends Tom Robinson with everything he has, even though he is sure he will lose. The life lesson: Never give up. You don't know whether or not you will succeed until you try.

Also, Atticus says this famous line to Scout about Boo Radley:

If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.

She later discovers that Boo Radley isn't a horrible monster, but rather a gentle recluse.

Life lesson: Don't judge someone until you really understand their situation.

The book isn't particularly subtle. Thats also a pretty easy topic. This isn't particularly helpful either. Hah.

Don't trust whitey.

But seriously:
1. Racism only breeds bad results. (Don't be racist, I guess)
2. Rumours and first impressions aren't always true. (Boo Radley)
3. This one has to do with Atticus, but I can't think of it ATM.
