I've been considering getting EMG's for my Ibanez s470 (H/S/H pickup configuration, with a five-way toggle switch), but the EMG site says that with the 81/85 combination, a five way switch results in 'dead spots' at positions 2 and 4, due to the nature of the pickups. My question is, does anybody know if these 'dead spots' would occur with a 81/S/85 combination at positions 2 and 4?

Yes you'll have dead points, because those pickups doesn't have coil split... But there are the a new version of the 81 with split coil but there is not for the 85...

OK, thanks guys.

Time to question just how much I love my 5-way switch, or consider different pickups.

because the EMG's don't have the option to coil split, i believe ^.

so you wouldnt get the auto split feature?

just wire it up like a strat, solder red and white and tape off, so theyre allways in HB mode, and you'll get HB/middle in 2 and 4

i don't know what you mean by that...

wouldn't that get him a much higher output signal on pos 2 & 4 ?

The EMG 81's and 85's only have a red and a white wire. Red going to the battery. They cannot be split, so they are always in HB mode regardless...

Also, to TS.... I don't think it's a good idea to mix active pickups with passive pickups... I'm assuming that you are looking into a single coil that's passive?

Sorry it wasn't clear, but I meant the EMG S single coil pickup. I know of the drawbacks and complications of using a passive with actives. Thanks though.

Just get a 3 way switch if you don't use 2 and 4 that much,

but

I'm almost positive that with some, not too complicated wiring, you could get HB/S in 2 and 4. You'd just have to jump a couple poles on the 5 way. Look up wiring diagrams for splitable HB's and figure out what poles they make contact at for positions 2 and 4.

Well, the EMG site said that the dead spots could cause damage to my speaker cab, and I haven't yet bought these pickups, so I don't want to take any risks. But if this was a viable option, I'd go for it. Do you reckon if I took it to a guitar shop, with the wiring diagrams, they'd be able to do it, even if it is a little unorthadox?

EDIT: Also, if I got the splittable 81TA and 89, mixed with the S in the middle, would that work, and be wired up normally for a H/S/H guitar?

I would go talk to a tech, and tell him what you want. I'm almost positive that you can get this to work for you. It should just be as simple as jumping poles on the switch or splitting a wire...

Also, I'm not sure how seriously I would take it that dead spots will ruin your cab.
Many guitarists have used dead spots on switches as a kill switch. Also, an installed kill switch is essentially the same thing.
