When using a borrowed boss sd1 to get my dsl to push into metal, how do i do it? It really doesn't do much on the clean channel, do I have to use it on the od channel or am I missing something?

Yes you have to use it to Overdrive your Gain channel... But even then it wont take an amp that cant do metal into the metal realm. OD's emulate tube distortion so on the clean channel it would be good for blues and stuff like that. On the Gain channel you can either put the gain at 0 and level at 10 to tighten things up and drive the tubes a bit harder or gain on amp at 3 and gain on pedal to taste but sometimes they dont mingle well....

Oh I must be totally wrong then, i figured that an od pedal drove the tubes harder

It can...but you also need to eq the amp to suit what tone you are going for. What sound are you wanting?
