Right before anyone starts ranting about all muslims being terrorists etc that isn't what this thread is about
I was just wondering why muslim women are permitted to wear veils in britain..

the purpose of the veil is to shield the womans face from men so that they would not attack or rape her (due to her attractiveness) as women are inferior in islam<--correct me if i am wrong please

However rape and assault are illegal in Britain so therefore the veil is not necessary so it should therefore always be removed if asked by authorities (police, airport check-in etc) yet it is still not removed by many.
I am only referring to the full veil here as a woman can be identified if her face is visible

any ideas anyone?<--for or against veils....

It's culture, part of their religious practice. It doesn't always has to have a literal purpose, maybe they put it on for symbolic reasons.

Muslim women aren't permitted.

IT'S NOTHING TO DO WITH RELIGION. IT ISN'T IN THE KORAN!

It's a "cultural" thing; walked past "one" the other day and it's just plain uncomfortable, on their part...

Before people say it is part of their religion it is not, for the serious.

Why are they permitted? Due to the long standing freedom of religion allowed by governments until the introduction of the Human Rights Act in *thinks* 1998. Which means that under EU law, Freedom of Religion is protected, much like a codified constitution like in the USA.

Well, I can wear a hoodie, effectively, veils are linen hoodies. Don't flamify me, just a superficial observation.

I don't agree with veils, since they're often symbols of Muslim Male Dominance, but necessity is hardly a reason for illegality, it's not necessary to listen to crap music yet millions of people do that, they shouldn't be put in jail. Actually the should, but you know what I mean.

wrong wrong wrong wrong.
Men and Women are God's intended design, therefore we all share equal rights, therefore women are not inferior, they just have a different religious role.

you are wrong. It's called a Hijab and was only allowed to be worn by the wives of Muhammad because they were better than everyone else. Now it's worn as a sign of morality and religious piety. The vast majority of Muslim women who are not in a tyrannically ruled country chose to wear it volutarily in devotion to Allah.

Why do Christian and Jewish women wear veils? There are members of those religion who cover ya know (and it used to be much more prevalent too).

Hmmm, maybe it has something to do with modesty.

I love your "women are inferior in Islam" comment. Where is Islam? I haven't visited there before. Didn't know it was an actual location I could go to. Didn't know that there was some prescription that women are to be considered inferior there too.

^^Hijab is the hair covering, I think niqab is the veil...

1)Women are not any more inferior in Islam than in Christianity.
2)It is not against the law to cover your face.
3)The veil is some modesty thing. You're supposed to only show yourself to your husband. It's partially to do with the inflaming lust thing but not entirely.

Anyway, it's not a crime to cover your face so the police don't stop you. If they feel that you should (e.g passport control) then they will. I'm pretty sure you have to at passport control...

And many Muslim women in Islamic countries that don't legally force the veil upon them would disagree with you. In Egypt for instance, where the donning of the hijab by urban women professionals has both political and religious significance.

It's often a choice the women make themselves. If it's forced, then it's an issue. If they choose to do it, there's nothing to do.

*FACEPALM*

In islam women are supposed to cover everything except their face, hands and feet;they must not wear anything to tight or too loose(so loose that it shows parts of the body)
there are no rules in islam as too cover her face, and covering of body is done so as to avoid the sparking of "evil" gazes from men(if you know what i mean)

and i just cant get over the fact that this guy took the wearing of a veil to such an extent as to save one from rape,i mean,WTF?!?!

I know this doesn't have anything to do with veils, but it does have something to do with sexism in Islam; a woman was raped by another man in his car, them SHE was punished - for being in the car of a man other than her husband. This was is Saudi Arabia (I believe) which isn't a tyrannically rules country as far as I'm aware.

I'm fine with it if it's a choice but sometimes it isn't. And I don't see why any woman would want to wear one.

But my biggest problem with what he said was that he said Freedom of Religion basically allows someone to do something because of their religion.

If according to my religion it was okay to murder, should I be allowed to do it?

it does happen in saudi arabia, (rarely i would add.)

however it's not that rape is legal or that islam encourages it, it's just certain wankers changing the law for themselves
