Finally, the GL jazz I ordered a month and a bit ago arrived today. I suppose the advantage is nobody has played it but me. And it's a fine, fine bass.

Imagine your normal jazz bass, now shave down the neck, move the bridge pickup a 1/4" closer to the bridge for more growl, add a BAII. And you have this bass. Crafted in Japan with impeccable quality, not a single build quality flaw at all. Not to mention the GREAT look of these instruments.

I'm probably gonna do a UROTM next month, now I have a sizeable enough setup. But for now, this will do.

Questions, comments, suggestions?

P.S. Apologies for the picture quality, phone camera, of course.

P.P.S. Soundclips possibly coming Thursday, will be a chance to get some in a studio setup, rather than at home sounding rather awful.

I'm aroused. How's it sound? I've been seriously considering a Jazz Bass as of late since my Silvertone is finally crapping itself, and you seem pretty happy about it, so thanks for the encouragement.

Very nice though. I've never played a Geddy, but I've never heard anything bad about them.

Nice one buddy.

It's almost midnight, I think I can be excused.

And it sounds, essentially like a jazz bass with more growl and brightness. Slap tone is amazing as well. Only complaint is the stock fender nickel strings are poor, it's hankering for some steel rotos, but i'm a little short of funds right now.

Awesome!

Except I dont like the feel of 20 fret necks. They feel a little sloppy to me. But if this was a 22 or 24 fret neck, Id be all over it!

I think you need to stop caring what people think about it. I stayed home all day today and masturbated like 5 times. Fucking blast.

A solid bass, really. The pickups are a "mixed bag" in the sense that they're really clear and pretty sounding but they're quite quiet.

The thin neck, however, scared the hell out of me. It just didn't "feel safe" under my fingers, especially considering I'm used to the graphite reinforced necks or Precision necks.

It's actually startling how different a graphite reinforced neck feels to the touch.

apparently according to geddy's bass tech there is a chance (not 100% certain about this mind) that geddy has overwound his bridge pickups to give them higher output.

dont hold me too this though

it would be a nice mod to make to the GL sig

Probably on his ACTUAL bass, but the sig has the same pickups that are in the Jaco sig. Beatiful sounding pickups, just a bit 'weak' as far as output is concerned.

there's an easy way to sort the output problem - If you wire in a switch that'll cut off all the tone and volume knobs, so the pickup is wired directly to the output jack, that increases the output.

Actually, that just reduces how much it is cut by . Is it really worth losing all tonal and volume control for though?

I took out all the controls in my bass and replaced it with a switch, cos i never used the tone knob(which was shagged anyway) the volume was just for stopping feedback when i propped it up against an amp. Plus i had problems with the output being too quiet. The tone off it now is crystal clear, i just use the gain and Eq on the amp instead - the gain is usually at 0!
