i was wondering what would be your recommended exercise in developing string skipping.. Cheers!

You could try something basic like playing rhythms using octave notes, e.g:

G|-------4----4----4--4-|
D|------------------------|
A|-2--2----2----2-------|

Or you could learn the immigrant song.

alt pick. go up and down the neck. change the intervals/fingerings. be creative. you can come up with something. thats just a starting point

Move that continously down the neck and up without skipping a beat. Alternate picking is a must, start off slow.

Chromatic runs can be done string skipping style as a very basic starting point.
You could just play, for instance...

||-------------------------1-2-3-4-----------------
||-1-2-3-4-----------------------------------------

or...

||-----------------1-2-3-4-------------------------

Substituting the 1-2-3-4 for other combinations such as 1-3-2-4 or 1-4-2-3. Don't forget to do each run backwards and starting with both downstroke AND upstroke.

Then you could move on to something like...

Just some suggestions. I tend to try and make up as many variations as possible to give my fingers a better "vocabulary".
