pitch relies on a few things

mass of string
tension on string
length of string

the way they make strings, some come out heavier than the pattern might predict they should be so you have to tune them tighter

if you have a gibson style headstock you might find that the 3rd string's tuner is most prone to being knocked as its exposed

I hate that third string. I was doing a solo classical guitar piece for a school concert, so i get up onto the stage, start playing - oh damnit!! my thrid strings out of tune - so i just quickly swap guitars with my buddy and get on with the piece...and to think I tuned my guitar beforehand and everything, I was highly irritated, but yes it was quite funny afterwards though.
Punctuation it the difference between:
"I help my Uncle Jack off a horse."
and
"i helped my uncle jack off a horse"
