Anyone have any pics, links, or other reference into the dissection of a humbucker? Sounds simple and basic enough, I'd just kind of like to see what I'd be getting into by "breaking" a humbucker in half.

My usual odd and ridiculous thought process is involved in this question.

ummmm... if you do it correctly, i believe you'd end up with 2 single-coil pickups.... possibly... i'm not really an expert, but that would make sense.

Thats what I'm hoping for

The idea is to take a humbucker I like (For instance, the Duncan JB, or DiMarzio Steve's Special), crack it in two, and use the halves as the middle and bridge pickups of a strat, wired so that I can select both pickups in series or in parallel.

I'm just curious about magnet and wiring layouts.

Yes, and they would be wound in opposite polarity. I think.

Word. One half has to be RWRP for it to be hum-cancelling.

Will do.

Its just a thought at the moment, but IMHO, its a pretty simple and clever idea for getting a tone you know you like without having to compromise with a "similar" rail pickup.

It won't work. The magnet goes between the two coils.

You would have to do something to get a magnet for each coil, and that would probably work.

^ Thats what I thought and was afraid of.

Don't suppose I can simply cut the magnet in half and place the corresponding halves in there corresponding locations, can I?

or get 2 single coils and put a series parallel switch in?

I was about to make the magnet point...
I thought this was the case and I actually had a small argument in my brain before posting because I wasn't sure

why are you trying to do this the hard way ???
1 - Check that your middle and bridge pickups are of opposite magnet polarity. (probably are)
2 - Wire them so you can select both in series or in parallel.
3 - ?????????
4 - PROFIT!!!

Neither the two singles OR the two halves of a HB will sound like a HB when spaced that far apart.

Absolutely an option.

I was just trying to think of a way to get closer to a sound I'm familiar with and I figured even with the extra spacing, I'll be closer than if I had used 2 pickups which were voiced to be used in Parallel.
