So as the title says my mom was on the computer last nite and downloaded a program that was messing with Windows XP or something like that so we had to format the computer, I lost all the pictures I had on there, some of them of my grandfather who died a couple years ago, and about 200 hours of music, so Pit is there anyway for me to restore this stuff, and yes I know I should have backed it up but Im really lazy

That sucks. And also happened to me.

I'm told by a friend he can fix the old hard drive I still have, once he gets a special screwdriver...

Edit: ^I have over 200 hours of music on my computer that I paid for.

Don't jump to conclusions, even though there's a 90% chance you're right...

Get off this damn forum and play your damn guitar.

I'm pretty sure iTunes backs up the music you bought, you should check with them about that.

Also, there are places that can get most, if not all, of your files back from a wiped hard drive. When files are deleted, they're just put in a section to be written over, they aren't actually deleted. Before too many are written over, some people can move them back into the usable section.
Telecaster - SG - Jaguar
Princeton Reverb, Extra Reverb
P-Bass - Mustang Bass
Apogee Duet 2 - Ableton Suite

I'de tell you mom about this and make her pay you for the music you lost. Sorry to hear about the photos as well. May i suggest investing in a portable hard drive so you can backup your files.
#18
if you reformated the computer already then NO! they are toast! sorry, you should go out and buy an external hard drive for a back up.

^^Thats good, but I have to reinstall iTunes that wouldn't affect anything would it?

I'd say no, since songs you downloaded are registered on your iTunes account, which is independant of the program itself.

Unless she saved a backup of the hard drive before she did that, it's gone for good.

There's software our there that can restore files after a reformat, but the more stuff you put onto your hard drive after the format, the more you'll not be able to recover the sector gets overwritten. (BTW I'm a student finishing my 2nd year in computer science, I have an idea what I'm on about). I've used such software before. Unfortunately none of the files have names (so working out what's what is fun). I assume it would keep MP3 tags though so your music might be safe).

A very brief google for "recover data hard drive format" yields the top result of http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ which is a piece of software for doing exactly what you're saying. Might be pricey, but I dunno, you might be able to get a free version somewhere.

Rule number one with computer problems - if the answer's out there, it's on Google.

Formatting the hard disk permanently erases all stored data. There is no way that you can restore the data. Sorry.

For the future, I recommend buying another hard drive and store your OS on one hard drive and your documents on the other. This is probably the most fail-safe method that you can make.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Reformatting actually does wipe the hard drive. The only thing remaining are tiny tiny tiny fragments of files...nothing is going to be there for you to try and retrieve.

But to others, if you delete files, you still can get them with software, but this simply isnt the case with a format.

Why didn't you tell your mom that you needed to backup your music first? You realize you can use your ipod as a mass storage device and just copy all of your music from one PC and take it to another, right?

It would have taken maybe like 20 minutes.

Take off your belt and roll it round your hand a bit. Give you mum 20 'of the best'. She needs to learn her place. I mean, what was she even doing out of the kitchen anyway?
