+1 Epi LP's are pretty good guitars. especially if you get the pack with the valve junior in it. that is a wonderful little amp i have heard.

Um.. I would suggest a Fender Squire, Ibanez Rg160, or Ibanez grx20, they go for about 149.99 usd
and for amp, the best and cheap one i can say would cost a bit more than ur budget. THe Line 6 Spider III 15w. It has 15 watts but believe me, its versatile as crud. Though it goes for 99.99usd which would mean a total of 250.00usd, i think u shud definitely rob a pretzel stand for it.
No offense, but i dont believe in starter pack though i have tried them, i think seperate items are better.

Best of Luck and if u plan on robbing a pretzel stand.. i take no involvement
Current Gear:
Ibanez S Prestige
Ibanez Grx20
Line 6 Spider III
Laguna LE122
Technics ml1200

I have one, and I like it. It's pretty reliable (I've had mine for 3-4 years with no problems).
But it has a really thin neck made for shred, which I don't really like. But it seemed more solidly built than a Squier I played.

Overall, it's a good pack, I'd rate it 6-7 out of 10.

Personally, I've never played them, but I know that Dean makes budget guitars for about $80 or so. Look up Dean on the Guitar Center website and you should find them. Ampwise, try a Cube 15. The guitar, plus the amp and a cord (very important if you don't buy a starter pack: DON'T FORGET TO BUY A CORD), should cost about $200

don't do the budget dean. i have the ibanez GRG121 starter pack and it's been pretty awesome. or you could buy the epi LP and an epi valve junior. it would cost about 300-ish but you would have a dang good setup to start out with.
