even Malmsteen knows when it gets ridiculous.

Um... no, have you ever seen him play acoustic? When you die and you go to hell you will be strapped to a chair and forced to watch Malmsteen play original acoustic compositions for all eternity... as if hell wasn't already bad enough

I love Malmsteen, so it probably won't be that bad at all, unless he plays the same songs.

Sorry, but all I managed to get out of that was a reminder as to why I get sick when I hear sweep picking.

Malmsteen tries to play acoustic like it's his Strat... and aside from being illogical he has absolutely the worst tone in the history of anything ever.

Good example of a guitar god playing acoustic:

pssh! I can play faster than that.

it wont be in key and will probably consist of all open strings, and it would be so fast that all the strings would sound at once (like a chord)..

That was a truely bad video you picked for Malmsteen.

Also, who plays the Grandpa's Guitars for fun anyway? Paul Gilbert's a n00b.

meh. cool i guess but kinda boring. half the time it sounded like he couldnt stay in key and he seemed to play the same kind of sequences over and over again. it seemed barely musical. i have nothing wrong with fast playing but there comes a point where its just too much and it just ruins everything. although he might just be showing what he can do and not focusing on being musical. i havent listened to any of his songs yet.

im not a malmsteen fan, but i dont see why he cant play his acoustic like an electric. i dont really switch my styles around much when i switch from acoustic to electric. plus i think that kind of tone can be blamed on the pickups on that guitar. id have to see him play an actual acoustic instead of that one which i think would have a piezo pickup or whatever they are called.
#14
It sounds about the same to me. Same sh*tty tone, just not busting all his electric chops.

And I know, I'm not big on the grandpa's guitars either but Gilbert at least played acoustic like acoustic and his tone was better.

I don't switch much either, but when you're playing shred that was written for electrics on acoustics, it's just... laughable. And the tone is the piezo's fault, it's just that he never changes the pickup on any of his acoustics, as you can hear in the videos, and I don't think he knows how bad his tone is.

Not saying he's not a talented player, it's just that he must not hear his acoustics real well

Still doesnt compare to PG dude... You need a lighter pick with classical guitars. He plays as if he is playing Arpeggio's from hell.

You're a Gilbert fanboy - get over yourself. He's not the greatest.

And this video that the TS posted... lame. It sounded like **** and its nowhere close to being 58 notes per second like the video claims. Maybe 20 something at tops.

Im not a Gilbert fanboy and I'll happily say PG > Malmsteen.

Who cares, I own them both at acoustic. Although they are better at electric. But they both suck at acoustic.

Now this is acoustic playing. As much as I love metal, spanish guitar is just WAY harder.

that dude was just playing 2 or 3 different shapes up and down the neck for the most part, playing fast doesn't mean shit if you can't sound good while doing it.

That was utterly horrible. Too fast, no nuances or feeling. Complete lack of soul and melody.

right on! one of my favorites by yngwie. I dont listen to yngwie much cuz i cant stand his tone, and all his music is fast.
I had to get a replacement after I broke my G string. What a pain in the ass!

Honestly, you picked a horrible video to sport off malmsteen, But I would also love to rip on the acoustic that fast and get that clean of a ring. I'm sure if he slowed down any acoustic stuff you would bow down to some of his stuff, but they are both amazing so whatever.

He was definitely playing fast, but it was kind of messy and crappy-sounding. I've seen players just as fast that sound a lot better. One of them being this guy, who actually has very cool phrasing and tone, with exceptional technique: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbZfwcp36mM

Yeah, fast player doesn't mean good at composing music.

Actually, that video has been clocked at somewhere around 16 NPS. It may sound "slow" but think of the fastest you've ever seen rusty cooley pick. That's probably 16 NPS, as no alt. picking by him has been clocked faster than that. PLUS the fact that he has a horrible tone in there so you can't really tell what he's doing all that well.
#33
That's nothing.
Guinness world record, man played at 320BPM.

Edit: Maybe not.
But still, that's unofficial!
Signatures are overrated.

Played what at 320 Beats Per minute? 320 BPM in itself is pretty slow--it's between 5 and 6 NPS. I don't feel like doing the math.

It was just playing notes in different scales over a backing track.

I'm not sure why that matters. He wasn't TRYING to impress you musically; he was demonstrating his technique.
