How do you know what note to add for like a c add 9? How do you figure out what note the 9 is? Im asking about all chords in general with added notes

Thanks

By learning the theory behind scale degrees, which leads into chord construction. The theory sticky at the top of this forum is a good place to start.

well to make C add 9 what u do is grab the major scale

now the C maj is C, D, E, F, G, A, B

now to make the normal C maj chord u grab 1, 3, 5
which is C, E, G

now to add a 9 on u go through the intervals and keep going through to u count up to 9 which in this case is D
so the chord is C, E, G, D

e---
b---3
g---0
d---2
a---3
e----

8 would be your root(perfect prime) an octave higher so 9 would be your second an octave higher
song stuck in my head today
