Ok guys this is a theorectical question, not a which better, but which is more versatile. Would you say humbucker or single coil. Bearing in mind if you couldnt have a coil split installed or have hotrails mini humbckers. Basically a straight foward humbucker or single coil.

The humbucker can be more versatile if fitted with a coil split, i think.
for single coil and humbucker tones.

i'd say the humbucker is probably more versatile, but less interesting to listen to.

with the single coil you have a more specific sound, and it's brighter, and prettier clean, but it has a pretty specific sound (with each different type of single coil having its own sound, from tele to strat to p-90 and so forth).

the humbucker spreads out over any style of music and has more power, but is also darker, and in my opinion, a little less "soulful".

I know what you mean danny the single coil clean has such a woody element and can be orgasmic. But with distortion i find them a little to peircing, and as i said this being a theorectical question your not allowed coil splits

You can split humbucker and make one works as a single coil. The sound might not be as good as a real single coil but pretty darn close.

Equally versatile, though if you consider p90's single coils, than I'd go with that

It's an irrelevant question - a pickup doesn't do anything on it's own.

The versatility of an installed pickup is affected by a number of things, how it's wired, where it's located, what other pickups you have on the guitar etc.
