Alright, I'm thinking about getting a new amp to upgrade from my cube 15W. I have decided on the Crate V-series. Most likely a 2x12 combo. I have a few questions though:

Are they built well enough for gigging? They look like they are, but I'm just judging from the pics.

Also is the cabinet built good enough?

Are they good enough quality? That's my main concern.

Also, they don't list the pre-amp tubes. The power amp tubes are EL84's. So obviously it's going to be a Brit-Voicing. But what about the preamp?

Or is it possible to have a SS pre-amp with TUBE power amp? if so, is that really a good idea though? or they just trying to cut corners?

i own the 1x12 combo that i use for our church. theyre built well enough. havent had a problem with mine and its almost a year now. i cant say about the cab though.

a bit modern voiced, but it can still do those classic tones. the preamp tubes are 12ax7. they break up at around 2 on the gain so its easy to just use a boost to get that OD sound. the crunch is almost up to marshall territory.

12AX7's? Are those the most common pre-amp tubes? what about in vintage amps? My dad's Ampeg Gemini 1x12 from '68 has 12ax7's as the pre-amps, nad 7551's or 7951's or somethin' like that.

Also, since these both have the same preamp tubes, would an Epiphone Casino sound better through the Crate or the Ampeg?

Are the Crates built good enough for gigging? is my main concern

Also, I plan to run my pedalboard through this....

it'a a chorus, phaser, expression pedal (for phaser), tremolo, and that Boss Space Echo.

would the amp's tone be okay without sucking too much from my pedals?

They are built pretty solidly in my experience.
I would just used the Ampeg because old tube Ampegs are really nice amps and a budsget tube amp (no matter how nice for the price) probably won't beat it.

And yes, 12ax7s are the most common preamp tube. They have the most gain so you can use 12at7s or 12au7s for less gain.

I agree, my Epiphone SG sounds ****ing sick through the Ampeg.

However, that said, my Casino just sound the same whether its plugged or unplugged.

Otherwise, yes I would use the Ampeg. Although I would put some casters on the bottom. That son'bitch is heavy!!!

i havent tried the Ampeg so i cant really comment on which is better. but they are built well enough in my opinion.

ive ran my strat, a les paul and a hagstrom viking (semi-hollow) on it and they sound great.

I doubt you've tried the Ampeg, they discontinued the Gemini models back in the late 60's. Even now, Ampeg only makes 2 guitar amps. The Jet series. They're like 20W and 50W 1x12 or 2x12. Not much. Everything is bass amps. 'Course that's what they're know for. SVT anyone?.....

sorry to re-animate the dying thread. I have a quick question.

Can these Crate V-series get a good or at least decent 80's tone?
