this summer i am planning on building and paintig a guitar as a replica of Eddie Van Halens black and white frankenstrat, i know what i need to do to build it, such as routing, wood filling and other stuff, but my main area of concern is the painting, i have what i need to do but is there any other steps i need or adjustments i need to make to these steps, or any unnecessery steps i am going to take?

1. Using palm sander sand off origional finish on guitar

2. Sand body till smooth and wihout imperfections

3. Paint primer on the body

4. Sand Down

5. Paint on a few layers of black paint sanding after each

6. Put tape on where stripes are wnated

7. Spray on white paint, a few layers

8. Peel off tape, sand down till smooth

9. Spray on clear coat/ varnish , a few layers, sanding down after each one

right thats all i can think off any other steps needed?

cheers, jimbleton

I'm gonna go ahead and say, that should be about it. If I were you I would just read up a little on how to sand to a glossy finish.

Other than that, your paint order looks ok, it looks like you've already done some research.

Good luck with the build.

wetsand between coats

most importantly... USE ELECTRICAL TAPE!!!!

it is the proper width and lays flat around the edges. eddie used electical.

use car rubbing compound to get the shine back at the end

other wise you are set!

yeah lots of research has gone into it, i have like 50 pics of eddies origional so i can refer to it from all different angles to make sure the tape goes perfect, electricians tape will be used, thanks for that, and i have been usig the pantingth read to read up on finishes

i think i used scotch painting and repair tape(close to electrical tape) for the big stripes and i know i used 3m fine line for the small stripes when i made mine. if you want to get a van halen style job, it doesnt have to be a factory type finish. you can look at my myspace pics if you need any references or questions.

also make sure you use decent paint. dont use the really cheap stuff-especially if youre gonna clearcoat it. i found duplicolor paint to work really well

shouldn't you do the lighter colors first
-Gibson SG Faded
-Behringer HB01 Wah (I realize it sucks, but i have no money right now)
-Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive
-Ibanez CF-7 Chorus/Flanger
-I'm not gonna list my amp until I get a decent one

Have a lot of patience, I know how exciting is to do stuff like this.

This dude http://youtube.com/watch?v=Wt-ah4IXxwc did a pretty good job on his, watch his videos.

Since there is no such thing as perfect tone, and every rig has differences (however slight they may be), I hereby declare this claim as bullshit.

i dont need to do the lighter coats first as long as i put enough white paint on the cover the black

thanks man. ur right, but i made it the kind of fit my style, and since i play a lot of srv stuff along with rock like van halen, i wanted it to be versatile enough for what i play.

ah makes sense then, im tryin to replicate it perfect, cos im gonna be bored this summer, i already have a standard strat for everything else so
