What is a good guitar I can get under $400 and plays good for metal? I was thinking of an ESP but I don't know their prices, and I'm almost sure they're a little expensive.

They're made in asia somewhere so they're slightly lower quality than US made, but they're still good.

ESP's Standards are Japanese-Made, and don't tell me they're low quality. But then again, it IS japan, nearly everything that comes out of there is good quality.
Current Gear:
LTD MH-400
PRS SE Custom 24 (Suhr SSH+/SSV)
Ibanez RG3120 Prestige (Dimarzio Titans)

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

The trick with any of the "budget line" guitars is to get your hands on them. You don't want to order one of those without playing them. You may have to run through a few, but you'll eventually find one that was well made and plays well.

My primary guitar is a long discontinued lowest line model Ibanez made in the mid 90s (the RX series, an RX-20), and it plays quite well. I get compliments on people all the the time about it. I bought the thing for 150 used 11 years ago, and just modded it to my tastes.

I wouldn't get an ESP under $400, they are pretty much all agathis. The really good ESPs start at the 400 series, which start at a little over $500 I think(my mh-400nt was $550 on sale so maybe a little higher)

Also around that price range be careful of cheap locking trems, they can be a real pain down the road.

Honestly at that price I would go with:

I usually don't like Ibanez, but I do think this guitar is great for the money.

Good for you.

Though if you pay a certain amount, or do something custom, I think paying without playing is an acceptable risk.

ESP's are THE best metal guitars you will find. Sadly, in some places they are hard to find. look at their collection here: http://www.espguitars.com/guitars.html ( Max Cavelera FTW!)

My fav. ESP's : http://www.espguitars.com/guitars_mhnt.html

Discontinued Black Fender Squire
Epiphone red SG Bass
Epiphone Studio Bass 105 Amp[sucks, came with my bass]

I would seriously consider the ibanez above its very good for the price.

Ibanez rg321mh

Agile Al-3000 or Agile Ab-3000/3500. Check them out for yourself. Really good for a cheap price.

Whoever said Asia's quality isn't as good as America's really needs some re-thinking.
American brands, I.e Gibson, Have gone down the ****ter lately with their QC. Where as Asian manufacturing, I.e Epiphone, Just keeps getting better.
Hell, ESP's custom shop is in Japan right? (Last I heard it was anyway.)

TS, don't call someone a dumb ass for recommending an SG, obviously you haven't done much searching of brands yourself.
Signatures are overrated.
#27
Buy Ibanez. Listen to nothing anyone else has said. You will never find a better bang for your buck than Ibanez. Just get a hard tail. Or anything without an Edge3. So go to your local shop and buy an Ibanez. And this is coming from someone who has owned many Ibanez's Schecter's and ESP's. go Ibanez. I will never regret it.

so your saying mexicans are better craftsman than asians?

well i started with a squire strat, and i got a decent late 80s thrash sound.

and schecter's are korean made

I played an Ibanez ART100 today on a Marshal amp, it was pretty metal when I had full gain and full bass, half mid and 1/4 treb, it was ****ing hard, and that's without any effect pedals, just crank everything on the axe to 10, switch it to both pickups, and turn the amp up.
