musical superiority. after someone gets really good they might get a little cocky, because they're "better" than everyone else. or they could be dicks from the get-go and their attitude has nothing to do with musical prowess.
#6
I've seen that with a lot of players, it's all just their ego's. They are aware of all the nice comments on their playing, so they just figure **** it, it's just another person saying how awesome they are, when they can't just realize it's just a fvcking compliment.
It's all just who the person really is deep down that describes if they're egotistical or not.

oh i dont know, ive met a few local guys who think their sh$t dosent stink because they are good guitarist. and these are just bar band guys playing top 40 stuff.....not that there is any thing wrong with being the house band and gettin paid to play. but these boys aint mr. malsteem by a long shot

that applies to all musicians. i've been around them all my life and believe me. once they learn how to decently play an instrument they will rub it in everyones face. i should know i do it too sometimes. we usually shut up when people that are better than us show us up though.

i think it has to do with the way a lot of people keep telling them how amazing they are, they hear it so much that they start to believe it and it goes to their heads.

This type of thing happens everywhere in life. Negative actions always get more attention than positive ones, so it makes it seem like everyone/thing is like that.

There are plenty of damn good musicians that are just so humble about everything, but then you have asshats like Yngwie and (oh shi--) Mustaine.

IMO, of course.
#17
I try to be humble cause I know there are thousands better than me, and i don't ever feel like looking stupid.

Alexi Laiho

I disagree entirely. I can't think of a single thing Alexi Laiho has done to come off as a dick. In his interviews he's always really relaxed and responds to any questions people throw at him. He made the 1 dumb comment to a magazine about Dream Theater when he was drunk and people raised a stink about it, even after he apologized and said he didn't mean it. If you can think of any other reason, say it.

Dave Mustaine has raised **** with a bunch of people in the musical community, so much that he has a section labeled "Feuds and rivalries" on his Wikipedia page with 9 different sections.

And I presume you've had many conversations with many great guitarists to come to this conclusion?

To be honest I think this has a lot more to do with your own character flaws than theirs. There's no point worrying how people you're never even going to meet conduct themselves, concentrate on sorting yourself out.

yeah, but by most accounts he was an asshole before he ever became a famous musician so that's a tad different in my mind anyway.

Being humble=more fans, and being a nicer person.
BE HUMBLE xD

Oh yeah, about Alexi Laiho - he has the rock star attitude on stage, nothing wrong with that, but he never says "oh I'm better than this and that".
Actually in the latest interview I read with him he said that "he still looked on himself as one of those guys who look up to Steve Vai and Zakk Wylde".
If he'd been all cocky, I don't know if he had said that.

we have this local guy who everyone calls "johnny 1 note" behind his back, because he thinks he's so good just because he's played in so many local bands over the years (probably because he gets fired so soon afterwards). He's quite old. a few years ago he played at wyeside (our local music festival, in a field next to the river wye lol) with a band, my dad was talking to him and he suddenly said in this really egotistic 'look at me, i'm an experienced musician' voice, "anyway, i must go, i have to set up the stage for my performance".

His performance was HORRIBLE. because, his tone was the worst i have ever heard. he was using a line 6 pod, probably with his EQ set at full treble with no bass or mids, into a Marshall JCM2000 TSL, probably with the EQ set the same, playing a fender strat, on the bridge pickup. It sounded like when you have dial-up internet and you pick up the phone while you are connected. He's also a crappy guitarist as well, its kinda depressing, because he thinks he's so damn good...
I like analogue Solid State amps that make no effort to be "tube-like", and I'm proud of it...

...A little too proud, to be honest.

It's called acting. He was in a movie for chrissakes.

Anyway, about Alexi, he is far from egotistical. I too read that article where he is complemented as being as good as Zakk Wylde (who is in actualitu a much worse player than Alexi) and says he prefers not to think about himself in that kind of light.

He made one comment bashing DT, and he was drunk, and apologized for it, but people are determined to hound him for it.

That said, the only guys I think have really big egos about music are Yngwie and Dave Mustaine. I love both of their playing, but Mustaine especially is an asshole.

Although he's not a guitarist, Axl Rose could fit into this category, but he's more of a power hungry control freak.

I think you will find people being a dick is a universal constant. Many dont need to be remotely good at anything and can still be one. But fame does tend to amplify it. People just like to think they are special. Of course I remember "special" people they rode the short bus to school.

i think it has to do with the persons personality to begin with. even though ive progressed a lot over my time playing and people always tell me how good something i play is, im still pretty shy about playing in front of people. but im also very willing to talk about what i do, how i do it, and things like that. and ive met some people like that too. but i also know people who are like how you describe. they just think they are the best and often wont let you learn anything from them (licks, riffs, progressions, chord voicings, etc...). i dunno maybe they are just scared that you will end up better than them if you "steal" their licks.

but i dont really care about that. music is more about sharing and having fun that being better than someone.

I visited LA and met Ace Frehley at a little guitar shop. He knew the owner and was talking. I was like "Oh my god... ACE!!!" He was like "Piss off kid!" then laughed and said "Im just yankin your chain. What can I do for you." He was awesome.
