I only have really crappy acoustic (like from walmart) and i want to get a fairly decent one. I enjoy playing all kinds of rock from metal to slow rock but i mainly play stuff like onerepublic etc.
I am not bad at guitar (in my opinion) but not great either.

I found an Alvarez RD8 at the local guitar store for $200 including a hard shell case. Should i get it?

Here are some links:

I think that you should. Here in argentina we don't see much of those at that price but it seems to be great. The thing that convinced me is the hard shell. Go for it man!

Wait till you have $500 and get a decent solid wood guitar. Everything suggested is plywood and you'll never be happy with it.

No. If you're upgrading, you need to at least move to something with a solid top or there's no point, IMO. For $200, the Yamaha FG700S has a solid spruce top, the Alvarez RD20S is $230, and the Alvarez RF20SM is $240. Go with a solid topped guitar.

Agreed with solid top. I'm actually helping a friend pick out an acoustic at the moment, and I told the clerk at Guitar Center "If it doesn't have a solid top, I won't recommend it to him, and he'll take my word over yours any day. I'll call you if we're ready."
Sincerely, Chad.
