Can someone please explain communism. I understand that it is the belief that everybody within the state has equal rights. I know that China is a communist state, i know that some people think communist Russia was a bad thing.. but why?

why are some people for it and some against it?

thanks

Everyone is supposed to be equal, but it always ends up that some people are more "equal" than others.
#5
China is not a true communist state.

I don't think it even qualifies as a communist state at all.

It's all pomp n' show.
#6
Communism as an idea is great.
However, It has no practical use, as there will always be one group that grows greedy, and takes substantially more than others.

China isn't communist, even though they're run by a so-called communist party. It's rather weird. They're all for the market economy, though. Soviet was more of a dictatorship than a communist state, really. Some extremists will argue that Stalin's reputation is exaggarated and that Soviet really wasn't all that bad - but I wouldn't listen to them, were I you.

Other than that, communism is a sort of ideology of the ultimate democracy, so to speak. A system where workers own the places they work at, and make decisions themselves without being commanded around by a boss, director or CEO. There's a lot more to it, of course, but I don't think it's worth it to write extensively about it here. If you're interested, you should read The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It's not very long (compared to most books), and is a good place to start.

However, It has no practical use, as there will always be one group that grows greedy, and takes substantially more than others.

That's the propaganda of the liberalists, saying that men are born greedy. I say it's part of our culture. Anyway, in a (real) communist state, people aren't allowed to "take".
I'm a communist. Really.

Neither of these are really Communist states. Communism is what Marx thinks will happen after capitalism implodes due to its inherent contradictions which leads to socialism. It is a classless society and a kind of pseudo-utopia - the state itself withers away and everyone is provided for according to their needs and their abilities.

For instance a family of 5 would have a large house whilst a single man would live in a flat.

Think of this. You study your ass off at Medical school, work harder than everyone else. Cool. You're rich and you buy yourself 3 houses. Awesome!

But then, communism says, NO EVERYONE IS EQUAL. So they take your money, and 2 of your houses and make you equal like everyone else. If not then they put you in a ****ty house like the rest.

communism the idea isn't a bad thing, in communist Russia no-one was unemployed, everyone was equal. It only failed due to the hypocrites in charge who were living in luxury and spending money on nuclear weapons to "defend" against America.

I think it could work, Cuba and China are doing alright and they are technically Communist

So you're saying that once you've got a medical degree, you DESERVE three houses? Because you're better than the rest, or something like that?

You're a bit off here. Part of communism is the culture - the idea that the society is the most important thing. People won't want to take medical degrees to get rich, they'll do it because they want to save lives and improve the community. Then, the surplus of the community is shared fairly to its inhabitants. Working hard for the community is a reward in itself - anyone who's done voulentary work will be able to tell you this.

i prefer the idea that i get what i ****in earn. if you earn it honestly it isnt greed. feel free to disagree, just know that im not one of those anti-communist people, im just not a fan of the idea.

The problem isn't communism itself but the aura that surrounds it. I myself wouldn't be bothered if the UK suddenly turned communist. It'd stop all of the capitalist money grabbing and secure the economy.

If you take away the incentive for working and making money this ultimately leads to less innovation which is what pushes the economy forward. Communism falls apart if you pry just a little bit into it...

communism fails because once the dictatorship of the proletariat takes control after the fall of the capitalist state they're often unwilling to relinquish power to make the stateless society.

Why would you want 3 houses? Do you need 3 houses?

Would an equal society be such a bad thing? Where all people have a oppurtinity to be eduacated and to live long and fulfilling lives?

Communism is designed to bring people together and make us realise that we dont need 3 houses, and the only reason it wo'nt work is because the majority of the population cannot get over the idea that you need to own things to be happy!

Plus with teh way things are heading and the way out consumer society is destroying this world communism seems like the most likely ideal to get us out of this mess.

You can't possibly earn anything honestly in our part of the world. Whatever money you earn, you've got to remember that the only reason you don't have to spend it all on clothes and food is that we're importing it cheaply from asian and african countries, where poverty is beyond our imagination. The upper class, dealing with stock markets and speculation, are even worse, taking advantage of other people's economic sufferings... I could go on and on, but you probably get the idea.

You seem to think that the ONLY possible incentive for working is giving people money. This is why we have to change the way people think. I don't work with politics because I get a paycheck, and I'm not doing programming for friends because they give me money.

You misunderstand the meaning of the phrase "the dictatorship of the proletariat". The proletariat, in this context, is meant to mean the workers, which in a communist state would mean the people or everyone. It's a poor choice of words, if you ask me - it's not a dictatorship if there's not one man on top.
I'm a communist. Really.

Communism is the extreme left of the political line, just like facism is the extreme right. It's a political system in which, everyone is equal = state controls everything. Say you have a farm. You a growing many vegetables. But the communist state decided that you will produce only potatoes. Then you'll have to produce potatoes and you will have to give the sate your vegetables, and THEY will give it back to the population.

Also, it means a really protectionist state. It means that there are very little to none imports/exports whatsoever, the country must be auto sufficient.

IMHO, it's not a good political system, like any extremes. Marx wrote his political work when he was poor as a hobo and it influenced his ideas.

It's not just as simple as left and right, though. You can have very far left authoritatians and libertarians, for example.

exactly what failed in soviet russia, because there was no competition and the economy had not been updated in 50 years...

"communism the idea isn't a bad thing, in communist Russia no-one was unemployed, everyone was equal. It only failed due to the hypocrites in charge who were living in luxury and spending money on nuclear weapons to "defend" against America."

i take it you're american so you cannot see how america's FEAR of this communism caused them to build up their defences. rusiia's nukes came SECOND they had to to stop america doing the same to them.
