well, the neck comes with a space for the locking nut, so I figured I'd just bite the bullet and put one on ayway, might make this easier. I'll probably end up just removing the locking parts, just so i don't have to worry about the hassle

Any ideas on the sounds from an 81/81 combo?

as well, i'm probably not gonna need a neck agle for this if i'm going stop-tail, right?

(sorry for double post)
I'm lookingto order the wood within 2 days, so what size will i need for a standard jackson-size strat shape?

the min. size of the blank is 14" x 22" x 1-3/4"
------

Shwiggity.

You need fine tuners for a locking nut. When you lock the nut the string goes slightly out of tune.

Locking nut without fine tuners =

EDIT: That size is good. You can go about 19 x 14 x 1 3/4 for a strat type shape.

i'm not gonna be lockingthe tuners down, i'll just be using the nut, as the neck was made for one.

I'll be ordering the wood tomorrow hopefully, and it should be here within a couple weeks, it's fairly local.

Just got a pic of the wood, should be here Monday!

Dimensions are 14.5" x 22.5"

I'm thinkin'a clear finish with a black grainfiller?

You might find it wont have enough of an angle at the front edge of the locking nut without pressure on the string, then your gonna have problems. Hope it works out though whichever way you go with it.

I used to have a guitar with a floyd that I blocked and didnt lock down the nut, it worked fine. I don't think you'll have problems, but I could be wrong.

Sweet looking build.

thanks, i'm still on the edge about the pickups, depending on when/where i get them, i'll make my decision then.

as for the nut, my guitarist never locked his down with a floud (never used the bar, so no need... O.o) if it seems too low, i'll shim it a little, i don't think that should be too hard...

you could always do some modification to the neck... or make a HUGE nut

Wodo arrived today, greeted me happily at the door as I came home from school!

A lot less figuring than in the grain than in the picture poated, so i'll find a way to transpose something of the like onto the guitar as an update!
EDIT:

That's going to be closer to the grain of the wood, but i still think it'd be pretty sick.

Whole

Front close

Rear, used mainly for showing the back routing.

I'm trying to decide whether i should do the 18V mod, and the way i've got my rear cavity drawn out, i'll be able to fit 2-9V batteries snugly in the "foot" of the L-shape.

i might have to expand size, but if i were to route for this shape, i'd have to go at least 1" deep to compensate for the battery size. My blank's just over 1-3/4" before being planed, so i'm hoping this will work out.

oh, and here's a couple pictures of my body blank! (my pictures, not theirs )

body wood still looks nice for a natural finish...

and this was metioned a while ago but no one answered it... u WILL need a neck angle for TOM/stoptail bridges!!! thought id get that out before ur build got screwed

okay. would CNC machines be able to route a neck pocket with an angle like that?

hermmm... i'll have to look into that.

should be going into the school shop to do the first cuts this week...

the tech teachers say it would be easiest to route the pickup cavities first on the CNC machine, by drilling into the excess and anchoring it that way. from there, control cavity on the back will be next, and i think after that, bandsawing the body to shape. then neck pocket? i'm hoping to have the neck by the end of this week, so if i can get this all cut out, i can start body contours whilst waiting for the neck + hardware.

still no firm pickup decisions, but i'd like to hear the 18V EMG mod to make sure it's what I want.

HOKAY!

so, over the past week, a LOT has been done (pics to come later today!)

I've:
-recieved the neck
-made a body template
-cut the body template, p/u cavities, neck pocket and electronics pocket as well
-Planed the body Blank to 42 mm
-CNC'd the neck pocket with an angle of 1.125'

-am CNC'ing the pickup pockets today
-am bandsawing and spindle sanding the body today!

(i promise, pics later! )

Very rough CNC'ing of the rear cavity

And the two of'em!

that's all for now, i'll be spindle sanding monday, and cleaning up the rear cavity with a hand router as well.

I put a shim under the body blank, and along with some crafty trigonometry, i figgered it out to get a 1.125' angle!
