I was looking at the boss micro BR but its 400 AUD.

Now if i cant find anything else i will probably save up for this but i would rather give up some quality for a cheaper price.

Right now im using a tape recorder and a play station 2 microphone so pretty much ANYTHING would be an improvement.

Tascam do some pretty cheap 'portstations'. Good analogue quality. Try Googling the 'Tascam MkII'.

check out a Fostex box its good for beginner recording and demo recording. its good for the quality.
these are all good for the cash and should suffice your needs. I'm working on album so its not good for me but i think its what you need.

Just about anything digital is going to cost. All the cheaper stuff uses cassettes.
