OK, so i ordered my second guitar, an epiphone les paul standard and i'm excited about that, so while i was playing on that i was hoping i could turn my first guitar (fender starcaster) into a sort of project..

now i know i wont ever make it sound like a true strat but i wanted to change out the pick ups to a different set, a set that could get me closer to the sound, and also some tuners because the damn thing will go out of tune if i look at it wrong...

so basically i'm just going to do those minor mods first, i was wondering which pickups to get and what tuners out there are decent? also from where? musiciansfriend.com seems to be the site that has everything..

and the starcaster has 2 single coil pick ups with a humbucker closest to the bridge, so i guess i have to change out my pick guard too if i want to ever get that weird slanted coil in there (what is that called?)

so.... yeah.

TIA guys

for instance,

if i got these pickups
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Custom-Shop-Texas-Special-Strat-Pickups?sku=301616

this pick guard (to fit with the pickups)
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/search/detail/base_id/56779

and these tuners
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/search/detail/base_id/85148

my guitar should theoretically sound better, stay in tune and everything should fit... right?

also my guitar is black so if i painted the tops of the pickups they shouldnt mess up right?

TIA

Probably, but it also kind of depends on your amp. If your amp is a piece of crap, you probably won't hear much of a difference.

i have a line 6 30 watt amp.

my biggest concern is that i want everything to fit.. and sound good but then again thats subjective

i disagree with your choices. those pickups aren't bad, but if I were you, i'd get Fender Lace Sensor pickups... I wouldn't change the pickguard because i think that starcasters already have a single/single/single configuration, so IMO it would be an unecessary expense. I would get any locking tuners, which do a great job in keeping some in tune, and for about 30 bucks more than the tuners you're looking at, its a better deal.

it will stay in tune much better, sound drastically better, and yes, the pickups will fit.... obviously it won't sound just like a fender strat because of the grade of the wood, the craftsmanship, the neck, etc.

i would get a new neck if I was you as well...

my starcaster is a single/single/dual coil pick up set.. so i have to get the new pick guard, similar to a MIM strat

i dont know much about Fender pickups, but for tuners look into Gotoh tuners, they're great locking tuners, and not too expensive

Right, with new pickups you wouln't notice much of a difference with your amp. You would probably spend more money on your mods than the guitar is worth. Lets say say a new set of pickups cost you $150 and then $60 for tuners. You could nearly get a used strat for this (maybe a squier though)

why get rid of the humbucker? keep the same pickguard, and buy a new h/b to make a fat strat. or get a Mean 90 or Dream 90 to have a large, fat, single coil sound in the bridge position, like a P-90. I have heard alot of good things about the Mean 90. Seymour duncan makes some too I think, but they cost more, though they are probably a bit better, but not by much from what I've read.

here are some good cheap humbuckers: http://store.guitarfetish.com/humbuckers.html

and this is the pickup I was talking about: http://store.guitarfetish.com/gfsme90altrp.html
