Okay, this is bugging me now...

You can buy a Gibson SG Special in the uk for £450.
BUT, you pay £850 for the standard...

These guitars have the same hardware, look the same, except for fret inlays and pickup covers..

Why are gibson charging an extra £400 for this, and what makes a standard worth so much more than a special?

Are Gibson trying to rip us off..?

Special has a different bridge pickup, 490T as opposed to a 498T. A different neck profile and the fingerboard joins the body at the 22nd fret rather than the 19th on the standard...

It's all on gibson's website

Though, "Are Gibson trying to rip us off..?"
Most probably yes....

Gibson name comes at a hefty premium, but the special is a genuinely lower quality guitar than the standard, in terms of wood and craftmanship; although the special isn't a completely terrible guitar, that brand name affects the price

Isnt that better- better fret access- no neck join in the way?

Apparently, Gibson are importing with gibson Europe, instead of Rossetti... May bring Prices down...

I thought the guitars were made out of the same wood?

the standard is better than the special... the bridge pickup on the standard is better... it has better hardware and inlays... the finish also plays a part on price.. the special has faded finish...

But then only the big name suppliers will have Gibbos in stock. I talked to my local music shop and they said that they cant order in anymore Epiphones or Gibsons until they buy a Gibson License to sell them, which costs a tonne apparently.

I think you're getting rppied off by the Importer on the standard in this case, theres no way the Standard should cost almost twice as much as the Special.

That's my preferred store for guitars, and they usually have very good prices (but also great service which is why i choose them) but their prices are pretty much the same as described, and if you go across other sites it's a regular trend

yeah then it's because whoever imports them for Gibson is jacking up prices.

^ yeah, GV ftw!

Actually need to get back down there... they have a free set-up for my rg waiting.....but its 30 mins...

Anyway...back to the issue at hand...

Basically, i think the consensus is that the standard is a better guitar, by a fair way. But since this is the UK.... Gibson's are just even more expensive...

^ Like most guitar stuff imported from the US, darn import tax and money thieving; it's also similar with petrol prices

Haha GV is probably the best guitar shop for miles, plus they're friendly, also, where are you a student to(i had a bit of a nose)?

America isn't much better about gasoline anymore. Over $4.00 a gallon here now, and we have much bigger cars and most of America doesn't have public transportation. Canadians are in the same boat, and they are paying over $5.00 a gallon.
