I find using octave chords are good for that Team Sleep sound. Try using some echo

Also I like 6 string barre chords played clean.

You could also try Bmin with an open high e which I believe is Bmin Add 11 is I'm not mistaken.

Something that I came up with:

e--0-----0-----0-----0-----0-----
B--0-----0-----0-----0-----0-----
G--9-\-6-6-/-8-8-\-4-4-/-6-6-----
D--7-\-4-4-/-6-6-\-2-2-/-4-4-----
A--0-----0-----0-----0-----0-----
E--------------------------------
And as Cthulhu has already said, an abundance of sus2 chords work in a similar fashion.

having a drone or pedal note can give a dreamy feel. A pedal note is when you keep one note held for all of the chords, eg. One by U2 or Fake plastic Trees by Radiohead.

I think I read in a chord book that augmented chords are supposed to be dreamy but I never found that. Maybe I'm just not using them in the right context.

Very nice.....I love the sound that these arrangements make.

Deftones fan?

Use maj7#11 vamps trying out different voicings putting lydian embellishments on top. Sound perception is subjective but I've always thought that lydian is quite a dreamy and floaty mode.

Thanks (and you too, branny). I've never heard a Deftones song in my life.

To metallicafan616, that arpeggio is an Emadd9.

I don't know those bands, but check out any newer contemporary Christian music and you'll hear what you're describing. It's lots of sus, 2, & 9 chords with chorus & delay effects.

major 7th are good for a dreamy effect

I disagree. It's a really common chord.. I've never thought of it to be a dreamy chord.

Maj7 sounds extremely mellow, in my opinion anyway.

So since its common... it doesn't sound dreamy?

+1 its a matter of opinion, and context as well. I could see a Maj7th as sounding dreamy in the right situation.

Play a wholetone scale really fast. Instant bambi emerging from forest-ness.

He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice.

Yep, the whole tone scale is good for dream-ish effect.

I also based a song I wrote on this (but repeat it some more), move some notes around on top of the Emaj7 (2nd chord) play it slowly and really let the final chord ring. It should give a nice sound.

e------0-----------------0-------------9--7----0-----------------------------
B------0----------7------0----------7------------0-----------------------------
G------6----------8------6----------8--8---8----6-----------------------------
D----6------------9----6------------9--9---9----6-----------------------------
A--0-----------7-----0------------7--------------0-----------------------------
E---------0-9----------------0-9-----------------0-----------------------------

The final "006600" is a chord, it got screwed up when formatting.

Add9 chords I find to be really dreamy sounding. That is..

024100 Eadd9 (movable shape.. if you've got flexible fingers)
or
x02420 Aadd9 (movable as well)

There are more.. like madd9s, and other shapes.. but that's a good starting point.

Also, as was mentioned, the whole tone scale can sound dream-like.
Nor less I deem that there are Powers
Which of themselves our minds impress;
That we can feed this mind of ours
In a wise passiveness.

The harmnonic minor scale iirc. That's what they use for when things evolve into a dream sequence. Might be whole tone scale then.

But you want chords, so I'ma say reverb and delay, maybe with some chorus, and any cohrds should sound dreamy.

Octaves and droning notes, sus2s, I love major 7ths, whole-tone, maybe Lydian for a bit. Throw some harmonics in on top of those droning notes. I do that a lot

This is definitely not what the TC had in mind when he created the topic, and it might be because I'm going on 3 hours sleep, but this sounds pretty dreamy to me:

Even if it's not quite dreamy, it's still a good performance.

Sus, maj7, maj9 chords are very airy sounding.

*Epiphone Zephyr Regent (Gibson '57 Humbucker)

There's tons of different Dsus 2 and 4 chords that work well.

Im not really sure what i would classify this as but its quite beautiful....

---3--- Works nicely if you start on C major open
