I've been playing guitar for about a year, but it has always usually been by myself. I just recently played with a few people and I honestly didn't know what to do. Is there certain songs that work well when you first start playing with other people? any advice would be super.

^That requires knowledge of riffs, the ability to play complex music, and start and stop at the same time midsong.

Always start with a blues in E or A.

Definitely. Blues is a great place to start. Also try doing a section of a song that everyone knows or is easy to learn, like the verse of Dani California.

Keep it simple. Trying to do a whole song usually entails making changes at the
right times and without vocals to key off of, you'll have to work on getting together
to count bars -- something you probably don't want to do.

Simple vamps work well. Or if you know a piece of song to jam to, use a few chords
that repeat. It might get boring for the rhythm part, but you just trade off on the
solos.

You mean "Mary Jane's Last Dance."
Looking for my India/Django.
