so me and my buddies are sitting around watching the pens vs red wings game tonight, and im helping my friend out starting on acoustic guitar. so we're sitting there and i say

'hey man, ive got this old Crate MX10 practice amp sitting at home, what should i do with it?"

and he says immediatly, 'DUDE...FLOWERPOT!"

so i come and ask you, UG, what do you think? is it worth water proofing the inside of the amp, drilling holes in the bottom for drainage, putting up a barrier for the electronics and speaker, and literally planting flowers in the top of my amp? i thought that'd be pretty badass just as a side project for the hell of it.

opinions?

If you really want to do it, do it! I think it would be incredibly hard to make sure that no water made it to the electronics, it might be fun, and might become an meme on UG ala LOL Wut?
apparently UG's only type O-

haha exactly! might be a fun time and quite comical. i kinda forgot to use the searchbar in my excitement so let me check on that...

EDIT: no matches on search bar, so should this be the first flower pot amplifier?

yeah i know, but i just got a new tube amp, and although it's old and used, i dont want do it to that just in case i screw something up. water + tube amp = bad situation.

water + unused practice amp = fun.

alright, i think i'll give it a try. i'll get around to it eventually once finals and school are out and all. although lack of correct tools might kill me here. i dont care if it looks sloppy. it's just for the hell out it. hell i could i hang it from my porch and water my amplifier daily XD

any opinions are welcome, and when i get around to making it, i'll bump this thread.

haha dude. fishtank would be pretty hardcore...

the questions im asking myself for this project are:

1. fishtank or flowerpot, or anything else
2. waterproofing wood materials, or how to replace wood with glass/plastic for fishtank, and still make it waterproof.
3. sealents to make sure absolutely no moisture gets into electronics, or leak out of amp casing for that matter, and so the wood doesn't rot.
4. necessary materials list
5.cost total
6 is it worth it?

you guys want to throw stuff at me cool, otherwise i'll bump when i begin to build.

safe bet, that.

tbh, i think the idea is a bit silly. but if you must do this, maybe a Marshall MG?

id say drill your hole, then just get a small plastic garbage bag or somehting else that will fit and be easy to work with. that way it will create a barrier from the electronicshave the bag act as a gutter almost and just drain the water out the bottom if you wana cut a hole in it, if not change the bag weekly.. bi-weekly or something. just make sure to keep it away from anything that heats up. cool idea though, although looking at my little practice amps i think its gonna be hard to not cut into some electronics drilling that hole.

how to make an amp into a flower pot:

excuse my crappy paint images:
(you wouldnt guess that i do gcse graphic design would you? :P)
(and im predicted an A )

i could do a few layers of garbage bags if i follow with this idea, but it'd be a pin in the ass more than it already is. lol and it wont heat up much, it's solid state. and no electronics will be too much in my way.

and dude, thanks for the drawing! haha ant farm idea is great also. ive got so many options! thank you all!

now ie gotta decide and move on to work. i'll get pics hopefully. if and when this project happens.

i like the direction you went with the ant farm but have you ever had one of em get bumped? massive cave in is waiting to happen with the sound vibrations from it.
#16
hmm that is very true. i mean, i dont plan on making this thing portable, i won't gig with it

but yeah, even the slightest vibrations could send the ant tunnels collapsing in on themselves.

hmm. well ive got some thinking to do. once again thanks for everything!

Wouldnt the vibrations kill the fish? And the ants wouldn't like the vibes either. But the flower pot idea is amazing you should get a patent on it. I'm sure guitarists that are also gardeners would love it. The portable garden you can show off at your gigs :p

and to tell you the truth, its like a 6 inch speaker, im not getting a whole lot of vibrations out of it i bet. not lethal enough to kill decent sized fish i dont think. but the fact of water would be a pain in the ass to move period.

i think I'm going to stick with the flower pot idea. it can't be too hard.

1.carving the top out will be the worst part.
2.i can even put a wood division between the flowers and the speaker,
3. paint in the stuff i use for wooden outdoor railings to waterproof and prepare the wood for anything.
4.do clear coats and such on the open wood
5. decent sized bag for dirt and everything, but i must provide a drainage system

anybody got ideas get at me!

Now the next question is what will you be growing in your flower pot? heh. but doesn't the amp head usually go back to the back of the amp? I like chippythingy's idea of just sticking it on top (but still attached) of course the ant farm is questionable.
#22
You should go with the flower pot idea.
If you're worried about water leakage issues you could try making a recess in the amp that a plastic tray/container could fit into. This would also allow you to easily take the plant out for transport, repairs, checking for leaks and so on.

Edit:
Actually I think chippy has got it spot on, except for the ant farm.

wooo i did something right for once!!
yeh i know the ant farm is kinda stupid, and the other guy who said stick a plastic tray in culd be merged with my idea, where u have the extended wood sides, and then put a plstic tray where the bin liner in my drawimg goes.

Fish bowl would be amazingly epic! butttt. i honestly dont want to deal with the hassel of cleaning a fishbowl once a week. that's a pain in the ass.

what im thinking is:

- the back comes off this amplifier easily, replace that with clear plastic or something
- carve top out of amp
- find plastic container, fill with potting soil, and flowers. either set this in amp, or attach to top of amp.
- still have bag in amp for leaks

flower pot amp, and no i won't use this for weed. nah, pit would be more of a place someone would suggest this
